what music do you 'return' to?

If video sound tracks can be included, then I return to skate videos It doesn't matter what music it is, it's just all that noise that the camera picks up from the boards and everything around, it adds something. I have preference for a certain early 411 that has nearly every track from Mobb Deep's first album on it -the video's audio is like a Burial remix of the whole album.

I go in nostalgia waves... sometimes I get a bit melancholy, think that I'm not having as much fun as I was when I was younger and start listening to all my old goth stuff. I used to trek around following bands back then and I have rosy memories of hitching, blagging lifts with bands etc. The nostalgia outweigh's the dubious musical merits on the whole.

At the moment I'm revisiting my old punk/metal records... MDC, Crass, Godflesh, that kinda thing.

I wonder if one day I'll get soooo nostalgic that I go far enough back and buy the Kids From Fame OST...

Corpsey

bandz ahoy
Hip-Hop was all I listened to from the age of 13 to about 17. Still does it for me like nothing else (I'm talking about Mobb Deep, Tribe, Wu Tang, Nas, Gang Starr etc.).

yeah ive found that lately im just returning to late 80s/90s music when i was a kid/teenager. i think ive spent most of the last week and a half listening only to 90s music, either hip hop or jungle or R&B, massive attack or whatever. i think i could actually make a pretty good case for the 90s being the best decade for music ;)

When I'm tired of following tracks/names in the funky/grime/dubstep scene I return to faceless late 90s, early 00s techno. It's a relief listening to stuff you know little about socio-culturally.

Also stuff from my bboy phase and computer game soundtracks. Simcity 3000 has some great jazz and ambient tracks :D

Noiserock, some 90s (post) hardcore bands (the recent Frodus Conglomerate International reissue is fantastic) and Jungle. Although 'return to' isn't right, that stuff never really went away for me.

All about pride and egos
When I get all nostalgic the range I’ve got to pick from is enormous. I was a fiend for music back in high school and would devour everything from Warp records’ output, “post-hardcore bands” like Quicksand and Failure, other ‘cores in Converge, Botch, Dillinger Escape Plan, also Dr. Dre and Eminem, nerdy shit like John Cage and Anthony Braxton to make me feel smarter than I was, etc…

Though if I’m honest nothing brings back the past more vividly than Smashing Pumpkin records. It’s something about those guitar tones that trigger a response in my brain that releases every memorized moment of my life circa 12-16, rushing before my eyes.

Return to Magazine, Roxy Music, Bowie's Low, Heroes and Station To Station,
even '70's Young Americans Fascination or David Werner for a nostalgian fix.
Other times it's Cluster, Amon Duul 2, Debussy, Venom, Jamie Vex'd.

Not as nostalgic as used to sometimes get, mostly listening for production, tracking info
but sometimes a Mick Ronson solo beings a tear o' joy
( Moonage Daydream, Panic In Detroit )
:D

Droney stuff, Lamonte Young and Terry Riley and Main and things like that. Things I used to play when I thought I was clever.

I'm listening to the minimalists & 60s drone blokes more & more these days. When I was younger it was because I wanted to blot everything out in a kindof whiteout sungazing semireligious bliss, feeling hot & cold, coddled & desolate, all at the same time. Well, that's still there, assisted by several years of psychedelic drugs boosting my textual imagination, but half the time now I stick it on because it's fucking AMAZING to work to. Music for 18 Musicians or bootleg La Monte makes me burn through writing like aussie underbrush.

(La Monte Young's "Munich from Map of 49's Dream the Two Systems of Eleven Sets of Galactic Intervals Ornamental Lightyears Tracery" is on at the moment ... the indescribable brilliance of Mr Young the human bagpipe!!)

who let the Vargs out?

I always go back to Crazy Rhythms, by The Feelies, and Photek's Modus Operandi (even though it isn't very good).
