Surely you can see that along with the development of multitracking you got the idea of the studio as an instrument istself, or at least the organising principle, and not just a tabula rasa? Pretty revolutionary advances in music (e.g. dub, disco as Edward says) wouldn't have been possible...
JME is big but I always preferred (like 90% of MCs) to hear him in a crew context trading 16 bars while DJs do super fast mixing. There he is a wicked counterbalance to the more flow-y slew oriented guys.
I'd give it a go but I can't see myself getting into a whole set or album of JME or...
Indeed.
Ruff Sqwad productions have been amongst the most interesting things to come out of grime and a far more interesting than 90% of us hip hop/rnb...especially things like Anna. I know the critical acclaim of a few headz doesn't sell records or get you commercial success but still.
Some really good writing in this piece. Really glad to see something solid on dubstep from the wire, given all their bigging it up over the last few issues.
Anyone remember 'Deeper'? That track was sick.
I had a now lost Ministry magazine cover cd from late 96 or early 97 which had one of the ruffest garage DJ mixes I'ver ever heard...converted this young junglist to garage which in retrospect was a very important step...
Wasn't 'Speed' more of a media/major record compilation invention?
I think the speed garage period was essentially part of the continuum that began with the DJ-led reinterpretation of US b-sides and early 4x4 UK productions.
Yeah I would like to see this thread kept in some form, though I do see the mods point of view.
I think certain points raised in this thread would benefit from the room to breathe a specific thread would bring...but this is still the best place to come to catch up on all the odd bits of news...
I disagree. Fundamentally the music has to be strong, or at least interesting and in touch or expressive of something close or true to the listeners, even if it might appear superficial to others. The mass record buying public aren't dumb, at least not when it comes to the higher-order megastars...
I've knocked Sonar night on the head this year...gonna chill in the apt till late then head out for the parties...hopefully some dubstep to catch there this year.
I enjoyed Sonar a lot last time I went - not sure about it from a buiness point of view though.
Its just nice for laying round with mates listening to great music in the middle of Barcelona, I don't really go for the 'names' but the vibe is really nice.
Yeah man...I remember 'weird garage' being a tag for about, oh, 5 minutes (I read a little thing in Muzik way back which had M-Dubs, Dem 2 etc down as that).
