    Good contemporary British writing?

Not read Howard's End, but I'm guessing On Beauty's a homage rather than a rip-off. Anyhow, the story isn't the important bit for me. As you say, it's the human aspect of the book that's the real draw.

    Good contemporary British writing?

I dunno about White Teeth or Autograph Man, but On Beauty is a cracking read imo. The whole thing just struck me as so effortlessly detailed. Probably helped that I read it over a trip to a US college. Gotta give a shout to Alan Warner for The Sopranos and The Worms Will Carry Me to Heaven as...

Y'know, I haven't seen Gregory's Girl. It looks pretty similar from the IMDB page. I'll give it a rent/download n see.

Your top 5 countries of best music

    1. UK 2. America 3. Nigeria 4. Germany 5. Japan - Not so much for Japanese made music, although there's some wicked stuff out there, but for the sheer dedication. Massive record shops, amazing clubs and die-hard support of artists. Admirable). It does seem like a strange question to answer at...

Checked out Hallam Foe yesterday. Very interesting little film. It stars Jamie Bell, which probably accounted for the unusually large number of all female groups in the cinema (and they were rewarded with a couple of bare-chest moments and arse shots, so it's all good). Basically Hallam Foe's...

    Villalobos Fabric 36- Thoughts?

It's from the Fabric birthday thing -edit 21st July 2007-. I'll see if I can grab the promo tomorrow and up it. Think it might have been flying around on the messageboards so it may be out there somewhere already. It's streaming here. Will up it tomorrow anyway.

    Villalobos Fabric 36- Thoughts?

Started getting into it a bit more today. The louder the better, certainly. The promo, an exert from his recent fabric set, is much more live, less clinical and sounds better for it imo.

    favorite musical moments in film.

I was gonna bring up Morvy again, but it seems like that's the only thing I write about on this board! The attention to the soundtrack is certainly commendable though. I almost said the lobby scene from Matrix with Spybreak in the background, but watching it back almost 7 years older and wiser...

    blatant fascism

That taser video is mad disturbing. Absolutely mind-boggling! If that happened in the UK I think the students in that hall would've rioted... unbelievable.

    favorite musical moments in film.

Nice thread! I remember watching Nowhere to Hide back when I was at school and regularly think of it as the worst film I've seen to date. Is it worth another look with more mature eyes? The burning man scene in Daft Punk's Electroma, set to Sebastian Tellier's Universe is a good-un. Jaan...

    Villalobos Fabric 36- Thoughts?

The only bit that stood out for me yesterday was when the fourth track kicked in... but I fell asleep soon after that. I'm gonna keep plugging away at this one though, as I'm sure it was very considered and needs to be properly unpackaged to be enjoyed. That said, it's not as immediate as DE9...

It's in my CD player now, but without some considered listening I don't dare comment... give it a few hours and I'll have some proper thoughts!

Another list thread - are we turning into ilx or something? Female: Joni Nyro Minnie Ripperton (for for the performance than the voice) Beth Orton Winehouse (I'm sure she's robbed someone's style but there y'go) Angela McClusky Adele Bethel (of Sons and Daughters - for the pure aggression)...

Two Days in Paris - Very good... The kind of film Woody Allen should be making now. Very much in the style of Before Sunrise/Sunset, but with a comic edge. The story is the old relationship in difficulties shape chestnut, but done with some style and depth. I guess the extra dimension is the...

Just got myself one of those flash cards for my DS... already got a fair number of SNES games on there, as well as a port of the original Quake. Looking into chucking a few point n clicks on there too, for play around town. Great stuff.

    The Klaxons

Interesting article that. To my mind its definitely the fault of the prize itself that the Mercury gets viewed so negatively by so many people though. I mean I looked in every obvious place for these criteria and came up with nothing. Why they would keep it a secret only for the Guardian baffles...

    The Klaxons

Agreed, the biggest problems with the prize is that we don't know who's picking it and we don't know why. The official website is little help; "The Nationwide Mercury Music Prize exists solely to champion new British music... the music on the album is the only thing taken into account." Not very...
