Not read Howard's End, but I'm guessing On Beauty's a homage rather than a rip-off. Anyhow, the story isn't the important bit for me. As you say, it's the human aspect of the book that's the real draw.

Started getting into it a bit more today. The louder the better, certainly. The promo, an exert from his recent fabric set, is much more live, less clinical and sounds better for it imo.

Interesting article that. To my mind its definitely the fault of the prize itself that the Mercury gets viewed so negatively by so many people though. I mean I looked in every obvious place for these criteria and came up with nothing. Why they would keep it a secret only for the Guardian baffles...

Agreed, the biggest problems with the prize is that we don't know who's picking it and we don't know why. The official website is little help; "The Nationwide Mercury Music Prize exists solely to champion new British music... the music on the album is the only thing taken into account." Not very...
