for intimate transcendental ambient i would go for roedelius' selbstportrait, a piece like this is impossible to forget: also gigi masin which that lovely venetian air:

two recent records i like, both explore the area between improvisation and almost techno-like rhythms, both are intimate and (mostly) quiet. the first is andrea belfi from milan who has released stuff on die schachtel and smaller labels. his latest marries photography and music, hence the book...

where are the merlis, kinskis, delons and all that brilliant/mad stream of actors and films? they have disappeared along with everything else into a timid, safe shadow of itself. rip europe.

bumped into this ages ago, he seems to huge in russian (and lithuanian?) jazz/improv circles and has a daunting number of records, some of which are on youtube. a particularly good one (long free-form, electronic-sounding):

hard boiled. psycho hk triad boss' plans foiled by undercover/rogue cop team. it has everything: unlimited bad guys, explosions, cruelty, humour, bullets, yachts, motorcyles, babies, gunned down patients, western-style showdowns, a principled killer, etc. all this violence was for a good cause.

bloodsport. great soundtrack, lots of fighting, views of hong kong, uplifting story and is the source of that van damme gif.
