The Dissensus Poorly Titled Spiritual Jazz Thread

In case anyone else was wondering what the disappeared, mystery tune was: Pharaoh Saunders - The Creator Has a Master Plan (Karma, Impulse).

    Music Pioneered In The 2010's?

For lack of a better description: Night slugs house (probably close to ballroom, sonically at least). Also that Mexican (Monterrey) tribal house blew up that year. Didn't last long, though.

Name musicians/bands/producers you've never heard and probably never will hear

Yes, that is what I meant, of course. I have heard their greatest hits, as does everybody. I just never cared to sit down to listen to even one of their albums and I doubt I ever will. There is an obvious quality to their music, but it's lost on me. Most of it riles me up. Leo, is right, by the...

Name musicians/bands/producers you've never heard and probably never will hear

Prince, Beatles, Rolling stones, all of folk and punk. Too much stuff really. The hip-hop thread above as well, probably. I don't know what it is, laziness or backwardness, but for most stuff I should try to at least have a minimum of curiosity I just can't bring up the time and energy.

How do you find out about music now

Adam Harper's Rouge Foam is still going strong. He does not offer downloads, but frequently links to the Bandcamp (often free) download pages of the discussed music. Pretty fantastic.

    Name your price!

Was it this one? Bandfinder I agree that their search engine is lousy. On the plus side, it's an experience very akin to flipping through bargain bin, with the possibility of instant listening and downloading.

    Name your price!

As I find myself ever more browsing on Bandcamp, I wondered if it wouldn't be nice to have a Dissensus thread helping to separate the wheat from the chaff. So, here it is: post your best finds and must-listens! Here are some to start with: tags: autobus electronic house ambient chiado techno...

How do you find out about music now

BANDCAMP! I actually came to start a thread on it. I think we should do a thread for bandcamp 'name your price' jewels. There is some fucking great stuff to be found, really. Fact magazine does a monthly feature with great finds. I think Dissensus should be able to do even better.

    Hipsters: Scourge or Irrelevence

Absolutely, even if the shame needs some form of cultural mediation (through education, for example) in order to reach the whole of society, including the lower classes. The determining factor though, is that you need some cultural capital to recognise and appropriate even these (mostly)...

    Hipsters: Scourge or Irrelevence

I'm very late to this discussion, but could hipsterism be an evident outcome of youth culture in times of global economic crisis? I know that sounds very close to material-determinism, but observing this stuff with Bourdieu, it seems like hipsterism 'done right' (ie not bought at H&M) is very...

ok what is up with embedding youtube

Would there be a way to add Bandcamp embeds as well? I ask reluctantly, because I prefer discussion to endless threads with only Youtube or soundcloud clips. But I find myself browsing and listening ever more to stuff on Bandcamp and I think they're becoming/being really relevant.

    I LOVE MUSIC LOL

That's really important. When speaking of cultures, one tends almost automatically to deal in generalising terms, forgetting that there is a huge diversity within this so-called monolithic blocks.

    I LOVE MUSIC LOL

Such observations are probably coloured by experiences here or elsewhere, but I refuse to belief being an ass is a formal requirement for writing something about music that transcends the laziness of most music journalists.

    True Detective

I'm more thrilled by High Maintenance signing to HBO than the renewal of True Detective, to be honest.

The great BEER VS. WINE fight!

I had an Oud Bruin last weekend, such a trip down memory lane. My aunt worked for a brewery till retirement and this kind of beer was a staple at family reunions. If you like acidic beers (it's a strong if, I know) really something to try.

    I LOVE MUSIC LOL

I never understood the adoration for music journalists. I won't try to put a number on it, but how much of what passes under that term outdoes marketing blurb (like, say, what's on Boomkat) in quality of writing, theoretical depth or historical overview? It's a pity the blogs went away. At...

SEMI HIP 40 YR OLD SELLS CD COLLECTION.

For an instant I thought the vinyl referred to the fake wood floors. I guess that's something you start noticing when you're on your way towards semi-hipdom at 40.

The great BEER VS. WINE fight!

Much depends on the wine, of course. I drink wine only when eating. When not, I get annoyed by the acids too. Especially if it's a rather cheap table wine. Like both though. Wine is probably more differentiated, while beer is always more or less good. Good wine is stellar, bad wine is fucking...

    SeaPunk / Chillwave / Nu gaze / Glo-Fi / Molly Pop / Witch Trap / Special Characters

I am really completely in awe with anything coming out on 1080p and chanceimag.es. Just wanted to share that. So yes. Also: really strange nobody here mentioned them already.
