screwed grime

there was a screwed & chopped version of boy in da corner making the usual slsk rounds. it was uh interesting.

Oooh you handsome devil!

there's most certainly a metrosexual strain that runs through current hip-hop. without a doubt. when you've got guys in articles telling you to rotate your choice of kicks daily and clean that shit with a toothbrush (!), there's some serious attention to detail going on there. plus with the...

beanie sigel - the b.coming

well it's not a hard and fast rule: the reason i love "gotta have it" is the drums, first and foremost.

beanie sigel - the b.coming

tek tonic, i feel the exact same way about almost all non-southern mainstream rap these days. i think it's how they EQ it. (plus everyone has prissy, flaccid drums these days.) re. last track...haha well, cam'ron does love his MOR.

beanie sigel - the b.coming

can't get with the album as a whole (i think my tolerance for r&b bullshit on rap records is at an all time low), but "gotta have it" is easily my second or third favorite "single" of the year. and peedi crakk's got one of those amazing voices that just defies all attempts at transliteration.

what's yer top 10 - albums, singles, whatever

Yer mum

one of the highlights of my life is when i catch my mom singing the chorus to a popular rap song of the moment. the classic will always be dmx's "party up".

Yer mum

she was also hugely into disco, though not, she is often at pains to stress, the "bubblegum shit".
11. D

Yer mum

the quick answer is "black american music between 1960-1986". she kinda lost her way with modern music after rap began dismantling rnb, but she likes some rap and some of the more neo-soul-y current rnb.

Gang of 4 were shit. Discuss.

the gang of four are actually not a favorite band! (so i'm not 100% sure why i even care, except that they get a lifetime pass for the guitar on "anthrax" alone.) i totally wore them out through overplay during my college years. (plus they've dated for me in a way that, say, the fall hasn't.)...

Gang of 4 were shit. Discuss.

actually, i'm not particularly ready to discount the lyrics argument, though they certainly had their moments. but "stiff and soul-less" seem like funny adjectives to throw at a band whose entire shtick was to reveal the automoton nature of modern lurve. plus they have one of the greatest...

Alec Empire

empire's early breakbeat singles are just amazing. "hetzjagd auf nazis" fits nicely on a mix cd between entombed and nasenbluten.

The ol' ethno-tourism question

though if i took an informal poll of black folks in my building, i doubt they've heard of murs either

The ol' ethno-tourism question

well that seems to be dude's main concern

The ol' ethno-tourism question

the simple fact is that the majority of white listeners are going to be buying the game or even a b-lister like c-murder before they buy el-p or aesop rock.
