    Dissentian guide to Chicago

I've just got back from Chicago. Second time, I love it. I wrote a long report for another message board on food and drink, which I'll post here if that's OK. Record-wise, I recommend Permanent Records. Rock orientated, but vinyl specialists, with a lot of weird stuff like Mississippi Records...

    What's Sun Araw like live?

I've not seen him live. His new split LP on No Fun Productions is really good though, after a couple of slightly below par releases

    What's Sun Araw like live?

He was playing with Pocahaunted, who I didn't dig that much. Other similar types I've seen live –OPN (really good), Skaters (really good), Dolphins Into The Future (not great, at least when I saw them)

    What's Sun Araw like live?

I've seen him live and he's very good. Surprisingly in a way, I was wondering how the hell he was going to do it on his own. But somehow it works very well. Dubbed-out blues is the method, basically, with a good feel for textures.

Regarding JBs... I definitely agree they dropped off after Last Exit. Second and third albums still have some good moments, but it lost something somehow...

Oh, some of the JB's stuff is fantastic, yeah. Something's not clicking with this so far though. Will give it time.

I'm still getting my head around this album. The vocals sound a bit like the Junior Boys or something.

Here's the show in much higher quality (it's a 150mb download for 1.5 hours, so I guess about 256 kbps). Enjoy. btw, the theme music right at the start is Rhys Chatham's "Guitar Trio". http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1215648/Adventures%20in%20Modern%20Music%20-%20July%2015th%202010.mp3

If Dave's happy with it, I'm happy to send out CDs of the mix itself burned from fat ass aif format to peeps in London. They were sounding awesome in the office the other night. So if you want better fidelity for the music at least...

Hope you'll excuse the self-promotion, but this thread feels the right context to mention this – Dave Quam is on The Wire's Adventures In Modern Music show on Resonance FM tonight, talking on the phone and playing a mix taking in proto ghetto house through to footwork. Here's the blurb:
