I think I'm going to go for the Mud/Ruffage as well, just due to how much I remember enjoying the limited Loefah I heard before the crash. Thanks again for the remainder of the suggestions...can't wait to hear Haunted and Da Wrath properly. I'm from the frozen barrens of Winnipeg myself, born...

Thanks for the recommendations, just sent off an e-mail to inquire re: availability of most of the suggestions (after doing some more digging and reading through this thread, I've ended up ordering almost everything anyway...putting another strain on the pocket book. Put those suggested links...

    Dmz

Sorry to derail the music threads with a purely personal request, but who knows...this could prompt some interesting discussion as well! Living in a very small prairie town in Canada, dubstep has been fairly inaccessible (short of the Kode 9/Spaceape, Burial and Rephelx Grime comps) but a...

    Red Sparowes/Pelican/Isis/Khanate

OM! Of course..."Conference Of The Birds" on Holy Mountain is absolutely glorious and essential. One of the finest discs I've heard this year. The lead vocalist has managed to turn his performance into an echoey drone and the bass is exactly as described above :) And "Through Silver In...

    Badly Recorded Music

Les Rallizes Denudes to thread! The feedback and muffled quality of their recordings is, all bizarre extracurricular activities aside, what makes them such a mysterious and powerful force. It sounds like they've been recorded underwater at the bottom of an enormous lake, the reverberations of...

    Red Sparowes/Pelican/Isis/Khanate

The new Red Sparowes "EveryRedHeartShinesTowardTheRedSun" is majestic. Quality instrumental prog with crazy textures and thick bass. Otherwise...For Isis, "Oceanic" is my personal favourite. Khanate is a remarkably consistent band, and out of all their releases "Things Viral" is the one I...

    Black Devil Disco Club

Bernard Fevre is putting out a new disc under the Black Devil Disco club moniker entitled "28 After". Haven't heard it yet, but it's coming out (in North America at least) on Lo Recordings.

    Surrealism in Music

There's a piece by Boulez called "explosante-fixe" inspired by Breton's writings. Other than the entire excellent NWW oeuvre (as mentioned above) it's tough to find a lot of directly surrealist inspired music.

Kiss Picture Discs From Russia With Love!

I recall Frehley's "Back In The New York Groove" (those drums!) and "Snow Blind" being absolutely glorious as well. Prior to the whole 'face melting' thing.

Books you've read recently and would unreservedly recommend

Kobo Abe, based on the two books I've read from him, is fantastic. "Woman In The Dunes" was beautifully done...never thought anybody could make the motion of sand so evocative. And "The Ark Sakura" is hilarious...all about a rather large man who builds an underground ark to last out the...

name your top 10 favourite rappers ever

Good to get an endorsement on the Screwball and Hostyle...always heard of them in relation to other Queensbridge rappers, but never heard them. Thanks for the information, I'll have to order some up.

name your top 10 favourite rappers ever

I've always been curious about the Screwball and Hostyle releases (noticed that Godfather Don produces most of Hostyle's). Any insight into those discs?

    "easy" free jazz

Check out Grachan Moncur III's "New Africa". Very good stuff. Haven't been listening to too much free jazz recently (except for Paul Flaherty / Chris Corsano, which is definitely NOT what you're looking for) but Cecil Taylor's "Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come", whil different from the...

The wet Euro-arse fretless slap bass thread

If you hate the Seinfeld bass, avoid Phish like the plague. All the basswork on their goddamn albums sounds like the Seinfeld theme.

    nu-chamber?

Mostly agree with that sentiment, but that split EP they did with Matmos, Full On Night was very nice, especially the second track "The Precise Temperature of Darkness" (ponderous title aside). Could have been more Matmos' doing...I've never really found any other Rachels albums that exciting.

Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

That's a pretty extreme reaction, what were you expecting it to be like when you walked in? It never really tried to pass itself off as Onibaba or anything. :)

Why are there no good UK metal/hard rock bands anymore..

Blasphemer. Let's go for 'acquired taste', always thought his vocals complimented their sound quite well. They're such a unique band that a conventional metal vocalist would almost hinder them. That being said, just try listening to "Oro The Manslayer" and not want to immediately ride off...

Why are there no good UK metal/hard rock bands anymore..

Exactly! Beautifully swirling textured tracks with a really unforced epic feeling, and very emotional without crossing the line into cheese or moping...although I can kind of see it not translating well live. It's the most excited I've been about a Broadrick project in ages. Between that and...

Books you've never got around to finishing

Second The Magus as well, and I enjoy unlikable protagonists. The entire book seemed like one long, smug back-patting session with Fowles. The Collector was a good read, though.

Books you've never got around to finishing

That's eerie...I've tried reading it twice and have gotten to exactly this same spot before hitting this brick wall. Must be something subliminal in the writing. Enjoyed the back-and-forth between the main character and his housekeeper, but right at the point where the hunchback is stacking...
