    Favorite band names?

I'd just read about it, and didn't want to be preaching about it in case it was a work. Great name, though. And while I'm here, Godflesh. Godflesh.

Sleater Kinney break up : about time!

It really was good, yeah. Not my favourite, but I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that they seemed to be doing something new, for them, on pretty much every song. Fugazi doing handclaps! Fugazi doing Radiohead! Fugazi doing pop punk (the inordinately energising climax to 'Epic Problem')...

    Favorite band names?

Funny thing about band names is that so many bands have rubbish names that the good ones seem brilliant. I like the Nottingham kung-fu trend (Iron Monkey, Armour Of God) Lots that I can't remember at the moment, which is always the way. Man Is The Bastard, for one, as well as His Hero Is Gone...

Sleater Kinney break up : about time!

Loved their last two albums, just missed them in Leeds. That I'm gutted goes without saying. And I also hope Fugazi (nearest musical comparison, really) come out of hiatus soon...

No prob. Yeah, got that the last time I saw them. Very similar, structurally, though Flood sounds more 'organised' if that means anything. I'm deprived of sleep at the moment. Flood is more consciously 'epic' (in a super-Mogwai-circa-1999 way), while Feedbacker is more of a jam feel to me. I'd...

Japanese power trio. Debuted in 1996, I think, even though they all look like teenagers. Lots of stuff. I have bought 7 albums that they have released since 2000, and there is more to get. Notes I scribbled for another forum a while ago:

    DC Hardcore

Yeah, there is a lot of slowness out there. I wouldn't personally go for Monkey in that list (they were amazing, but very groove-based and quite hardcore in their guitar attack. That EP was prime Sludge, admittedly). Bongzilla are entertaining enough, Burning Witch were awesome (precursor to...

    DC Hardcore

Hmm, depends how modern/Metal you want to get. Integrity suggests pretty modern and Metal. ;) Some of that Biohazard ('Punishment') might work, as would Strife. Much more modern, but I loved them so. 'I Love You' by Black Flag is big dumb fun, with that really disturbing edge. First two TSOL...

    SunnO)))

The whole album's pretty similar; it's been dubbed 'Earth goes Country!' by less imaginative areas of the press. I love the album. It's certainly one that requires the listener to be in a particular mindspace, though, and is very sparse (even for this stripped-down genre).

    DC Hardcore

Ah yes, Billy Milano. I think Ian was in SOD (Stormtroopers Of Death), Milano's other band. They released the oh-so funny (not) Speak English Or Die... the worst thing is, this is looked at as a seminal release in the Metalcore movement.

Personally I prefer the aesthetic that Boris does for themselves, i.e. the Japanese Pink, or Heavy Rocks/Flood. I like Sunn(o))) a lot, might prefer Khanate (I reviewed them for my blog, when they supported Melt-Banana recently). In terms of doomy albums from last year, I heartily recommend the...

    DC Hardcore

What a great thread this is; I agree with the quality bands I know that have been mentioned (Fugazi are a total top 5 band of the 90s for me), and am all about checking out the ones I never got round to hearing (teen in the mid-90s, so I grew up with Metal and Metallic Hardcore). But yeah...

    GOTH ROCK (or dark glam?)

I'm not Confucius, but: Yeah, they were part of that NY scene at the start of the 80s, making absolutely brutal and disturbing music (think: Godflesh, 1989-92; Neurosis, 1993-6). Wouldn't say it was overtly political, though, unless you're counting personal politics. The themes were very...

    GOTH ROCK (or dark glam?)

Sounds to me like you want the early 90s Swans albums. They'd got more melodic than they were when they started, the mix had got really lush, but it was still killer levels of dark and obviously Gira's voice is as deep and menacing as they come (without turning pantomime). It's weird; I was a...

    anyone on last.fm?

I'm with you regarding the recommendation facet, but I just dork out at the stats of what I've played by whom. I am easily pleased on occasion.

    anyone on last.fm?

Me = http://www.last.fm/user/throughsilver Stat updating has been hit and miss of late, but it's a cool little resource for dorks like me. Now, if there was a way of having it document what I listen to on my hi-fi or iPod...

    Record identification thread.

Good idea for a thread, as I have a question of this nature. An erstwhile colleague of mine made me an 'Electro' compilation a while back. All old school rap and 'freestyle' stuff. Anyway, there is one particular song on there which is fucking amazing, and I can't really figure out what it is...

    Ambient house, noise, etc.

In terms of dreamy stuff with a bit of an edge, go for My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, as well as Manual's Isares EP. The latter is something that tends to get slept on (no pun intended) in my experience, but has some real beauty on there; be sure to check out the song called 'Wake'. Weirdly...

Classic mistakes made by artists when they go to make an album?

While I appreciate the perspective you're coming from, I think a major problem bands make when it comes to new music is paying too much attention to their audience. Bands especially get scared when they think they might alienate their audience. So you get disasters like the final Pantera...

Grime-where did it all go wrong?

That reminds me, actually. Is there a list (or could anyone make one) of essential Grime cuts for people who know very little about it, but are interested, like me? I got the Wire Primer; is there anything essential post-that? I've liked the Ruff Sqwad I've heard.
