    Burial "Untrue"

Burial definitely has both momentum (Versus) and rudeboy elements (Pirates), but not on this latest album...

Whats it like on the outside looking in?

Its not NASTY enough tho, there's not enough distortion... these records still sound a bit flimsy to me, they never really go anywhere near the edge enough...

    Learning to Play Guitar

You can definitely write songs on guitar and then end up with a finished product which is totally surprising and which doesn't sound obviously generically guitar-based... but it does take a little bit of effort... its a useful tool to develop chord patterns with, but then its often best to...

    Learning to Play Guitar

Well it depends on how you write songs--- if you tune the guitar into an unfamiliar tuning you can avoid this... also by deliberately avoiding conventional chord patterns (tho this ends up sounding like Xasthur half the time....) If yr using a computer just record yourself improvising on the...

    Learning to Play Guitar

This is exactly how I learnt, on a ridiculously chunky nylon string guitar (child's size!) I smashed it almost to pieces a few times and my father superglued it back together (tiny picture of a portuguese child playing a guitar on the inside too...)

    Learning to Play Guitar

This is interesting- are the other guitarists technically too good then, or merely fallen into repetitive habits? It is unfortunate that one you find something that works it is tempting rinse that technique until it gets very tired- the solution is exactly a you say to constantly shift outside...

Whats it like on the outside looking in?

Most people seem to say "Tortured" is a good tune. That or "Spongebob" (tho the latter I actually don't mind as at least he stretches the template- a bit...) Oh and "Night" Benga is a great tune. Maybe Im hating too hard...?

Whats it like on the outside looking in?

There is a Joanna Newsom dubstep remix out there (by Clouds I think)... grating isn't really the word, though I would add the harp is a great instrument...

Whats it like on the outside looking in?

I would add that I hate Coki Wobblers and George Formby style-indie even more than both tho... I have a lot of hate to give, so to speak...

Whats it like on the outside looking in?

Tho the Joanna Newsom dress-a-likes at the last DMZ I went to (ie- a while ago) were really offputting.

Whats it like on the outside looking in?

This is the precise argument I always give when I hear this ludicrous myth, but people just don't believe it for some reason.

Whats it like on the outside looking in?

This episode became a running gag between my Dad and I every time I would play him anything vaguely dance-y "It's got a good beat this hasn't it sir...?" (Lewis to Morse... cue withering look from the Classical loving Inspector...)

What's Left? - How the left lost its way.

This quote is just utterly sick-making.

The Wire, Arrested Development - Prototypes of a new type of telly?

    Burial "Untrue"

Though I bet he's used on a Newsnight report montage soon enough though...!

What's Left? - How the left lost its way.

They're ok. Not heard his other stuff yet. My issue with the whole MBV metal scene is that most of it ends up being waaay too lame and not metal enough... with the possible exception of The Angelic Process (but they've just taken relatively conventional gothish metal and put it at the bottom of...

    Burial "Untrue"

Well yes I can see how you could slot his music into your current schema Zhao... that he explicitly foregrounds the death of a purported immediate "soul" in the very act of artificially reconsituting it, a form of protest then. Although I would contend that this sort of argument would relate...

    Burial "Untrue"

Both of these are inaccurate! "Play" rifled through ancient blues vocals for a stamp of authenticity, Burial is after the exact opposite of this. "Life After Love" used a live vocalist through heavy vocodering. Burial achieved a similar denatured/hiccupping effect by pitchshifting fragments of...
