Martin's probably right: I'm not to be trusted on such issues. Gotta remember that I've spent the last six years or so complaining about dubstep (vis a vis uk garage) so it stands to reason that I'd get in early w/r/t "funkstep".

Brandon, I think the article came across as pretty clearly well-researched, I just think the dichotomies the article sets up aren't true to how the scene actually works, where people play tunes that fall into any and often all three of the "categories" (house tracks / skank tracks / funkstep)...

Argh I should have known that! No wonder it sounded familiar.

One of the things i'm always really keen to emphasise is that I don't think there is a single litmus test for what makes a tune "funky"; talking about what would make a tune "funky in the traditional sense" is difficult because it's more like a series of interconnected factors at the level of...

Maybe a case of the post-dubstep crowd that likes (some?) funky also likes Joy Orbison. It's a venn diagram. I found it interesting (though not sure what to conclude) that the 2 big funky tunes on Ben's Fabric promo mix - apart from "Wad" obv - were from Danny Native and Aphrodisiax - i.e...

All the above is true, and yet... sometimes received wisdom is just old jokes people no longer recognize as such.

Ha I was expecting that A Little Bit Funky tune "Funkstep" to be ostentatiously horrible but... it's actually not too far off the stuff that Scratcha played in his September funkstep set. Possibly a bit too light for that sound? Possibly would sound less draggy pitched up a bit? "Merry Go...

I think the article doesn't take a Rinse slant specifically so much as lean towards anything that specifically identifies itself as distanced from "funky" per se - praising "funkstep" and "dubbage" is basically playing the ends against the middle (and I don't see how both styles can...

Not true there have been several pieces-not-by-me that I've thought were just fine! And it's not like my own piece for Idolator last year was terribly in depth. Though it's fair enough that you'd suspect the above...

Ha cheers for the vote of confidence martin. I think you're right that it's reasonably informed as such things go and could have been more blatantly wrong, but don't you find the whole slant of it - assuming that funky is already on the way out and that "funkstep" etc. = "the new thing" - a bit...

This article js so off-base. It's exactly the kind of bullshit "quick let's invent an intelligent-funky sub-genre" indie-weekly pandering half of you said I was paranoid and curmudgeonly for expecting. "And as the music crests toward perhaps a final stage, funky has splintered into a mutant...

I don't know the ID but I love this tune as well, so sweltering. It sounds very Dennis Ferrer/Jerome Sydenham-ish to me.

Have a feeling it's originally from a Bizarre Inc song but that might be totally incorrect.

    Great 2 Step?

I thought Sound of the Pirates II was a comedown from the first one at the time, but I've totally reassessed in the past year, it's smashing. The only tracks I don't flat out adore are "Kinda Funky" and "Nike Boing" (i.e. the breakbeat garage tracks, go figure).

    Great 2 Step?

Heaps of amazing 2-step comps. Even ignoring the early ones that mixed it in with 4/4 I think the following are pretty essential: V/A: Timmi Magic - Pure Silk: The Third Dimension V/A: Shanks & Bigfoot - Ayia Napa 2000 (srsly!) V/A: Mikee B - Pure Silk In Ayia Napa V/A: DJ EZ - UK Garage Flava...

The "what what what..." tune is (surprise!) Sami Sanchez's "What". Madd. One is one of my favourite producers in the scene! Not just "House Girls Part One" but also "Tribal Conga" (you know it if you hear it, a particular favourite of Rankin's I think) and my personal fave "Gotta Have It"...
