    God

^ I'm sure you realise that pretty much any "flow" state, i.e. skilled practice of a discipline can produce physical states very like meditative mindfulness - sport, art, even working out math problems or digging the garden. Did you look at those links I posted about the lab work done with...

    coincidences

^Oh - I agree with you totally. But I'm not sure what makes them any more remarkable than pretty much any other natural phenomena. I was trying to argue against any "spooky" reasoning behind such co-incidences, whether mystical, or anthropomorphisising of nature.

    coincidences

Turtles is right. "Co-incidences" are for the most part, not remarkable at all. They're predicted by statistics - it's just human nature to attach special significance to them. Another factor is sub-conscious influences, so-called transliminity. This is what people like Derren Brown exploit...

More Like Space - The Lost Generation 92-94

I didn't make this mix, but one of my friends did (he posts occasionally on here...), enjoyed it so much I thought some Dissensians might like it... More like space: the lost generation 92-94 Compiled and mixed by Dexxual, Aug 2006. Still from "London", Patrick Keiller, 1994 Tracklisting...

    Red Sparowes/Pelican/Isis/Khanate

Hmm, they're a bit too post-rock in a Mogwai/GYBE way... no offense - I'm just looking for something more doom/sludge metally...

    Red Sparowes/Pelican/Isis/Khanate

Does anyone know if there are any (good) UK bands making this sort of thing at the moment? Excluding Ramesses, whom I know about already....

    lord of the flies

Hmm, a friend of mine recently related how there'd been an unusual number of flies in his flat a week ago... then this week he discovered maggots dropping from the light fitting in his living room. Something had died and was rotting between the floorboards... (wasn't the chap in the upstairs flat).

Steorn and the Free Energy Device

Ah, ok. By "free energy" I meant the creation of energy. Tapping into zero-point energy, or vacuum energy, which is what you're talking about, doesn't violate the 1st law of thermodynamics as it's just moving energy from one place to another, yep. The idea that magnets and momentum somehow tap...

Steorn and the Free Energy Device

I'm confused by what you say - free energy is taboo but it doesn't break the laws of physics? What Steorn claim to have created is a device that defies the conseravtion of energy - their device is not transfering energy from one enviroment to another, nor is it destroying mass to create energy...

Steorn and the Free Energy Device

This came to my attention via the Guardian a week or so ago: http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/story/0,,1858134,00.html These guys claim to have invented a magnet based device which can generate apparently unlimited amounts of free, clean energy. Seems highly unlikey, and the way the whole...

    Non-Prescription Drugs

Well, while I certainly wouldn't agree that all recreational drug use is self medication, some of it definately is. Be that as it may, no-one self medicates with ibuprofen because of psychological "pain & misery" - because it doesn't do anything to counteract anxiety or stress. But if you've...

    Non-Prescription Drugs

Stronger in what sense? As a painkiller? I'd take ibuprofen over weed any day if i had a headache etc.. and its certainly not 100 times weaker. You're talking about two different kinds of drugs here - both THC and codeine are poweful psychoactives, capable of producing fairly dramatic altered...

    London free papers

Whats going on with the new load of free London papers and their ever spiralling crapness? First Metro (bad), then City AM (terrible), and then in the last couple of weeks London Lite and The London Paper have both been launched. I was around the City during rush hour the other day for the...

    God

Is pantheism nontheistic? Certainly some "non-western" religions are non-theistic, and in their cases I think it's more correct to say that "there is no God" rather than "God is viewed not as a single entity but part of the natural world".

    God

Actually, there's quite a bit of interest in doing experiments with experienced meditators in a lab setting - see people like Evan Thompson and Antoine Lutz. Evan Thompson, Neurophenomenology and contemplative experience and Lutz, A., et al. (2004). ‘Long-Term Meditators Self-Induce...
