The Walkmen - bows & arrows

"The Rat" is excellent, but the rest of their stuff is largely pants, imho.

    going inside

Lets not get started on the Celestine-fucking-Prophercies. I assume bleep was taking about psychological issues apart from Lamarckian-pseudo-mystical crap.

    Mathmaticians needed

Hmm, well I'm not a mathematician, but I know a bit about it. I'm struggling to visualise this. What do you envisage by an "open-ended equation"? I find it difficult to see how an equation could be develop and passed on, rather than just solved. Or proved. Equations arn't really like...

    Vegetarianism

The empathy response is an interesting one. Empathy is currently a hot field of research in the cognitive/consciousness sciences, and there has been some interesting work that has shown that people will develop empathic relationships with decidedly non-sentient things (plants, inanimate...

    Vegetarianism

^ A friend of a friend used to keep both regular and soy milk in the house. She would offer guests the choice of "cow pus" (apparently some statistic about sores on udders in mass-milk production leading to % of pus in milk) or "monoculture environmental destruction"....

    new Brazilian Girls material

On the flip, do you think bands try to pick unusual names so that they will be easily google-able, and be able to get a URL for their website very close to their actual name? If I was starting a band, I know I'd be thinking about it...

    cassette swap

If we want to keep the anonymity (although I suspect that will evaporate quickly once people post rips and reviews to the blog), maybe those still waiting should email minikomi and he can email those supposed to send out the tapes to our addresses?

Have you read the comments section? "Isn't a journalist's right to protect their sources an established principle? I would have thought that Conor McNicholas (if indeed you are him) would have known and defended that? And if you are Conor Mcnicholas, are you claiming that commercial interests...

VICE magazine's G. MacInnes in The American Conservative

Of course it's been happening since the 60s - the movement has its roots in ideas of self-development - but in the 80s-90s things seem to have picked up the pace with more and more companies trying to convince us they can sell "cool". I'm probably not describing this very well, but if you're...

VICE magazine's G. MacInnes in The American Conservative

Isn't it not that hedonism became confused with rebellion, but rather consumerism became regarded as a method of rebellion (instigated by culture generating corporations). So we've been sucessfully sold back the idea that the act of rebelling can be done by purchasing, making consumer choices...

    Mark Gardener

I really don't like his backing band of recent years, Goldrush. I saw him a couple of years ago and it was alright, but the high point was definately him playing "Vapourtrail". His new stuff was not terribly memorable.

You can still use a POP client with Hotmail, so long as it's a Microsoft one - I use entourage with my hotmail account (standard free one) no problem. Although i think gmails extra features are pretty cool.
