@ slackk,

I noticed that you've been saying a couple of times on grimeforum that you think the grime scene would be better off without Logan Sama's radio show. Why do you think that?

He actually references Dizzee far too many times on the mixtape. I swear it feels like every tune I hear his name. Fuda seems to feel really rejected and perhaps a bit resentful of Dizzee, but then other times he gladly talks about making money like him, using him as a bar for success. He does it much more frequently than anybody else.

Another thing I wasn't big on about Fuda's mixtape is the weird "no homo" repression. He's got that one tune that is basically about beating the shit out of his girlfriend who cheated on him ("Be My Baby"), but then when he discusses Roachee's imprisonment ("Freedom Is A Must") he is basically on a seperation-anxiety crooning session, saying shit like how he wishes Roachee would come back so he wouldn't feel so alone.

All in all, I'm pretty sure Fuda Guy is a heavy neurotic.

Yeah that track is a bit grotesque as I remember. Dizzee definitely seems to hang heavy over him.

It's Slix who is Dizzee's cousin - or that's what Trim says on his tape, also saying Leon Wright is his own cousin and neither of the richer cousin looks after the less well off one.

It's not a diss on Logan, let me say that first, because I've personally been locking lately for the 1st time in months.
However, I do feel- and have done for a while- that the show is an unhealthy focus for such a small and unprofitable scene.
The amount of tracks that play on the show then disappear is ridiculous, i used to have a folder of about 200 radio rips and none of them were released.
Too many people use it as their only attempt at promotion- 'mixtapes out, i'll go on Logan and fuck all else, maybe Westwood if he'll have me'.
Not only that but because of the way people use the show (and possibly the prospect of prs etc) you get big tunes getting rinsed for months before they're even close to release. Look at Ghetto's 'Sing For Me'- that's been on Logan for months and it's a massive track but nuff people are sick of it because they've murdered the radio rip and it's on the show every week.
Where are the other methods of promotion or getting your shit out there, you know? The fact that people are just reliant on Monday nights on Kiss isn't healthy at all and it's to the detriment of the scene to be honest. I just feel without it people would be pushing themselves harder and more creatively.

In addition it's only added to this current climate of mixtape culture and people making songs for CDs rather than riddims for sets and raves which as you'll probably realise isn't my preference.

@ slackk,

I noticed that you've been saying a couple of times on grimeforum that you think the grime scene would be better off without Logan Sama's radio show. Why do you think that?

yea elaborate on that.
Reason I dont rate FMA is because I see Grime as a form of Dance music. I haven't been into all of the hip hoppy CDs like Ghetto Gospel and infact most of the Movement discs as I could never play any of the music out.

Most of the Grimeforumers have been brought up on hip hop and are now into grime(and they dont RAVE), so it is the perfect disc for them. A whole cd without a tune you can play in a club... Dont work for me.

Logan losing his show reduces acessiblity to hearing the music. which is not good. lazy people dont deserve anything. Dont want to promote your stuff outside of Logans show.. Ah well for them, shouldnt make the other people working hard suffer.

Agreed. Same reason I'm not much of a Movement fan as well.

Interesting points from Slackk, but I think you've got it twisted - I don't think it's the fault of Logan's show that there's so much focus on it. The problems you rightly talk about have only emerged since grime stopped being played everywhere else! When you had Logan on KISS and Maximum, Tubby, Bossman, Tootsi, Scholar/Begg, Slew Dem etc etc on Rinse as well it wasn't an issue. So I'm going to revert to type and blame Rinse for everything ;)

theres other pirates apart frm rinse. they all had a hand in taking grime off the radio.

Anyway I dont think theres much integrity with Grime shows, certain time it just sounds like we are listening to them just sitting in their bedroom or doing a set. Most shows are missable tbh.

No real structure, format or consistency. When I finish full time working on July 31st, Ill try and help. Only so much I can do though

Rinse's 14th Birthday @ The End. 22 August.

Pay As U Go:D

Slimzee, Wiley, Major Ace, Gods Gift, Plaguealero and Maxwell D. Looks like Gift and William made peace!!

Plus Spyro Vs Mac10, Kode9, a bit of funky and other less exciting dubstep people.

sure artists might get lazy thinking only of getting on logans or westwoods show, and almost EXPECTING to get on there maybe, but what other outlets do they have? these shows are GRIME shows, of course theyre going to think a lot about those two slots. no different from when there were only a few dedicated hip hop shows on london radio - artists knew they werent going to get on much else so they concentrated all their energies on those, cos they knew thats what people into the music would be looking to. doesnt seem so wrong.

PRS from Kiss is pretty minmal due to the regional thing - R1 specialist shows is where the PRS money is

I think Logan's show is a good thing for the scene, it can't really be anything but, the way I see it. It's a committed (the only committed) commercial radio show to playing 100% grime material, which is definitely a good thing because it keeps grime's identity intact, gives it solidarity, and lets others understand what it is on its own terms (the format of the show: playing out tunes -> interview -> live rave style set is perfect for this).

A return to club bangers, riddims and old skool style raves is wishful thinking. The mixtape/album route is by far the most sensible in setting up a profitable goal-oriented scene with concrete avenues to etching out a living. I don't think this format is making MCs less motivated at all; in fact, I think that they are becoming more motivated since now the game is no longer about writing bars that shower raves down, and its becoming more about making good tunes which is by far a much more difficult feat.

Aside from Logan's nose-in-the-air attitude towards people outside of the scene showing the scene love (e.g. shoreditch hipster types/ other people he doesn't like), or being a little overbearing in his opinions and stature at times, he is a positive influence for these guys and in the interviews offers pretty realistic and productive insight to them.

Lastly, I sort of like the culture of tunes being big all the time, but not necessarily on albums in the traditional sense. If MCs and producers don't like this, they simply don't have to release the tune to radio until they want people to hear it.

I don't have an edit button on my computer at work, but I'd like to add that Lil Wayne just sold more records in his first week than any other artist in recent memory based off of this model right here.

Yeah...that happens.

JME's album is like, just... out. he can organise photoshoots with Timmy Mallet but he doesnt want to do even a month of PR?!!! I dont get it...

I JUST found out that JME's "Famous?" is out and I'm looking around like "did I forget the release date?". After going through all of my info I realize I never had one or received an official one other than JULY. Now I have find a copy to review.

Does Kano have a release date for "140 Grime Street" yet cuz I just saw some mock ups for the cover art not too long ago and it's up on his MySpace as well. Why do Grime releases always literally surprise you?

LOL.
