Daft Punk

Hie all, I am Lex, very new to the board. I have gained so much knowledge, especially concerning music from this board and the people associated with this board.

I thought i would ask people about their opinion on Daft Punk and their "ethos". Although this is an ancient and a very popular band, i have only recently gotten into them, their sounds. Its only know that i get it.

I am watching Interstella 5555 now, i really like what this band is doing, i wish i got into them when they were much more active. I still prefer their Discovery album for now, maybe i might get their Homework album later. I feel it has very strong emotions, and it is quite danceable.i have also been looking at their live performances on youtube, and they have a brilliant stage!!!. their sets sound great, i m trying to get a hold of their BBC Essential Mix (impossible). And of course their Helmets and all that. It also has a good sense of humor.

I would also like to know if there is more music like this? with similar "ethos" (i am not really sure what it is), or just similar sounds. It sounds like electro Disco, it is very funky to my ears, of course its also a very polished and clean sounds.

I apologize if this thread is inappropriate, please let me know.

Thank you
Lex

Hey, I really like Daft Punk and my fave is 'Discovery', the album that Interstella 555 was made for, so this thread's pretty welcome to me. :D

In terms of other music that's similar, you could investigate all the leads via Thomas Bangalter, one half of Daft Punk. He has (had?) a label called Roule and has released plenty of stuff outside D.P....

http://www.discogs.com/artist/Thomas+Bangalter

The kind of sound gets referred to as "the French touch" quite a bit, so some googling around that might be handy. I think there's been a little bit of love for it here as well if you do a search...

The biggest crossover hit (well, felt like it to me!) was Stardust's 'Music Sounds Better With You', which was Bangalter + Alan Braxe + the singer. I find Alan Braxe (and his sometime collaborator Fred Falke) pretty great for that Daft Punk-y mix of house and late 70s-early 80s easy listening radio vibes...

Anyway, hope that's of use and not condescending...

I liked the DP vidoes but musically not really my cup of tea but you could have a look for Cassius for that 'french filtered house' sound.

Check out everything on labels Roule and Crydamoure. Some of the Bangalter stuff might be a bit hard for you if you're into the later Daft Punk styles.

Also check out Alan Braxe and early Bob Sinclair.

To add to the others, check out DJ Falcon & Les Rhythmes Digitales, they have music that could be desfribed as similar to the Daft Punk sound. Falcon has released on Bangalter's Roulé label, and Les Rhythmes Digitales has remixed the likes of Cassius, and gone on to produce work for Madonna under his real name, Stuart price. Guy-Manuel of Daft Punk also did producttion work on Sebastian Tellier's last album, Sexuality. The sound of that album is similar to some of the Discovery tracks, particularly the more laid back ones, but a little more synth focused as opposed to Discovery's use of samples.

If you enjoy Homework and Bangalter's more techno stuff, it'd be worth checking out Soundhack, I'd say he's one of the primary influences on that chopped up sound that's so prevalent on Trax On Da Rocks etc.

They have quite a similar approach to sample based house/techno, even though the end result can sound different. Got in to a period of listening to Trax On Da Rocks etc on the subway, walking home from work etc. and trying to listen to the individual samples & parts rather than the melodies they make up, and did the same when I first started listening to Soundhack; maybe that's why I'm making the connection.

mm, i don't know about soundhack (but i see what you're getting at) but i think his stuff as sound stream would appeal to daft punk fans, especially "live goes on" and "love jam"

I was never very into the french house stuff, but I still remember listening to Motorbass' Pansoul fourteen years ago (!) and "getting" this house beat-thing for the first time. Before that I snobbed house like every other adolescent grunge adept :)

Motorbass is actually the old band of Philippe Zdar (aka Cassius/La Funk Mob) and Etienne De Crécy (aka Superdiscount). Their sound is often less polished than Daft Punk etc. But like dubstep six years ago, it has that undefinable dimension so typical of music that is onto something new.

Thank you

Thank you Simon78 for the essential mix, i never thought ill get to listen to it. Quality!

Before this thread i was completely ignorant of this whole French House Scene. very interesting, I like their approach to bass lines and the subtle hints of kraftwerk-ness in their samples. This stuff is so groovy.

Also I stumbled across this amazing live exerpt recently. Real hairs on the back of the neck stuff:

It's available on the Alive 2007 album.

The Motorbass 'Pansoul' double CD pack is one of the best house albums I've ever bought. The second CD is just brilliant, a collection of older EP's they done. Etienne DeCrecy's underrated 'Super Discount 2' is probably the closest thing to Daft Punk in style from him though.
