yep i know the area he lives.... im not too far from him....im hoping to run into him by chance
Whenever I’ve seen people whose work I’ve admired, I’m mostly on about entertainers of the famous type. On the subway, in the street or in a bar. Unless we sort of lock eyes and I sense they won’t turtle up or outright run,*
I leave them be. If it feels right I’ll say in passing something like “Hey man, thanks for the music” and keep it pushing.
I had a close friend who was is probably 72 now. He was a huge John Lennon fan.
One day in a whole in the wall Irish pub on Columbus Ave. he’s sitting at the bar, sparsely populated. He looks down the bar and there HE is, John Lennon. By himself. Having a pint. His first impulse was to buy him a drink, go over and proceed to gush.
He thought about it though. And, after deliberation in his head decided. No. This guys music had enhanced & changed my life etc. the biggest way I can thank him is to let him have his pint in peace.
That was like a month before JL got gunned down. He doesn’t regret not bothering him.
*in my younger days (teens) we’d (my boys) and myself love to go to Times Square (when it was Times Square. Beyond all the peep shows & porn theatres there were old movie houses that for $2 would play 2nd run horror or kung-fu movies. We’d bring in our quarts of beer, smoke a bit, just have fun.
Afterwards we’d people watch and just be teenagers. One time we’re standing just off an alley in the area & Debbie Harry (Blondie) comes walking out of nowhere. We were young stupid & high. So of course we start shouting like Yo Debbie! C’mere, where you rushing to etc. naturally she sprinted (in heels)
At Olympic level speed away from us.
Those sort of stories/experiences made my mind up for me when in a similar position
