We were clearly watching a different game. I don't disagree with you about England's chances of serious progress (or, sadly, about Carragher), but I thought England played OK in the second half, used the wings well and created quite a few better-than-half chances.

yeah i'm being a bit OTT. I hope you're right. We definitely could've and should've won the game, but with the decent chances falling to heskey it was too much to ask for i guess. I do think carragher was a liability though, he got booked early on in the 2nd, got skinned by altidore down the left towards the end which brought about USA's best chance... he was close to bringing the guy down from behind too which would've been his 2nd yellow.

is everyone still enjoying the vuvuzelas or beginning to find them annoying?

i quite like them - more than that interminable england supporters' band playing the great escape every two minutes anyway.

but apparently the vuvuzelas operate at about 233Hz if anyone wants to dampen them out with their telly's EQ.

I'm getting into the crazy horns. The african cup of nations was like this as well, it's not too bad once youu get used to it. I'd imagine the atmosphere on the pitch is pretty weird with the constant hooting.

i'm absolutely peaking off them, top stuff, someone said on Twitter it reminded her of La Monte Young (i've also had Metal Machine Music and Japanese noise off other mates, but i think the Young is perhaps fairly accurate, whereas those other two were being a bit flip... ...lol, talk about Dissensus analogies)

true - i must admit i was willing Altidore to score (and he got pretty bloody close). I just can't support England when they're playing teams that they should be superior to. My nationalism only kicks in when they're playing one of the favourites.

denmark-holland is apparently dull- having to take the guardian's word for it as the fucking ITV live stream won't work. Is it too much to ask to watch football at work? I mean, really.

poor Danish left-back.

a nothing special Dutch cross, he just headed in an OG (touched a team-mate on the way in too) when it would've been far 'easier' to successfully get it out.

ITV stream is working fine for me! you're not missing much though, another pretty dull game, though the dutch have picked their game up a bit for the last 15 mins.

Yeah. Excellent performance from Ozil. Lahm was on form too. Fantastic game. Certainly the best of the tournament so far.

Great game. Only problem was ITV's sucky fucking stream meaning that at times it looked more like a game of FIFA Soccer 96 for the SNES than a live game of football.

"Cameron 2 Japan 0, Eto first scorer, 35/1. Can't go wrong, can it?"
Another Tory victory eh?

I thought Heskey was one of England's best players on the night to be honest.

I was introduced to this today:
http://tvcatchup.com/

I watched the last part of the game on there and it worked well for me. Much cleaner than the itv interface.

Heskey did Heskey's job decription OK, but since the traditional striker role has been rewritten for him to preclude any mention of scoring, he only ever does OK up to a point. He was worth his place on the pitch, though I still maintain that if England are going to become something special he's a luxury we can't afford.

That's pretty much true - he's a non-scoring striker who is supposed to make things happen and in the fifth minute or whatever he did. Then again a natural goalscorer would have snapped up that one on one he had later in the game. It's a tough one but on balance I'd rather our strikers are able to score - shouldn't be too controversial a thing to ask for really.

Scoring is overrated. Anyways, you only need to score more than once if you can't trust your keeper to make routine saves.

Whatever happened to the idea of Gerrard playing in 'the hole' with Rooney as an out-and-out striker? What was wrong with that?

I didn't enjoy Saturday much, but, Germanty aside, the quality in this WC has so far been so low that I can see England going far, as long as they win this group. If not, they're fucked.

I found myself regularly thinking 'well done Heskey, didn't fall over there' and 'well thank god he passed without losing the ball'. This probably shouldn't be the case.
