because it's an adidas ball it's been in play in the Bundesliga since January 1. because the EPL is in hock to Nike and Umbro, no such for them... oh apparently quite a few leagues have been using it.

That's ridiculous. Did no-one comment on this officially at the time? So for all its money and status, the Premier league was still using a ball different from the one that was going to be used for the World Cup? That's absurd.

Yeah, totally wild. That kind of spoils things a bit in my mind, knowing that we could be watching something much better if it weren't for certain sponsorship deals etc.

Why do they even need to have a new ball for every World Cup anyway?

= $$$

Capitalism is shite.

it's the biggie - slovakia against new zealand!

apparently it's a good game - hopefully neither of them will be pushovers for Italy.

It's not a good game. Planned to watch the first half, left after 30 mins. Slovakia need to win this one to have any hope of getting through - Paraguay getting a point did them no favours.

Liars, dmaned liars and the Guardian.

Also: "The Jabulani was, however, used in domestic leagues in Switzerland, Portugal, the United States, South Africa and the Netherlands last season, and in the French Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations."

Do not read this.
Completely understand the above feelings about the ball. Don’t know if there is any connection between it and the 3 howlers made by keepers so far (England obv, Algeria, and Ghana, but the Ghana keeper managed to stop it going in, was close though)

Did you know the Final Ball will be a LTD edition Gold one? Probably costs around £150 to buy in the shop. Really didn’t want to sound like I am advertising the fucking things, just thought I would give you that bit of trivia.

Just got in and sounds like another dull match. Sorry chaps (see upthread), but this is really turning into the worst since WC since, like, ever. Plenty of time to make it up, ,obv, but so far we've had one good display (Germany), one good-for-a-minnow (SK) a good opening match and a crock of boring defensive shite.

England USA is looking like a classic in comparison. This has been a duffer so far.

I hope it's only because it's the 1st game, with lots of match ups which no one wants to lose and few where there's an obvious favourite who needs to go out and win. The problem is, though, that the logic can prevail up to the end of the group stage - there's never a good time to lose. And frankly if you were scared of losing in game 1, you should be more scred of losing game 2 or 3, cos you've less time to get it back.

What this needs is the Australian cricket team approach, realising that you can knock opponents out by going for it, and the balance of risk shifts as a result. So IC should have seen today's game as a chance to knock out Portugal, and vice versa. Whereas they've now both got risky games against Brazil.

The ITV website?

I love working in an unbureaucratic workplace :)

Unfortunately my boss can see my screen from her desk, so I can only sneak a peek when she's up and about (so to speak)

Also, is it my imagination or have there been more offsides and long range shots that end up in row Z than usual at this tournament?

BareBones

yeah lots of overhit passes, corners way over everyone's heads, free kicks ballooning over the crossbar... i'd like to put it down to this jabulani but from what was said earlier it seems every man and his dog has been using it all year apart from in the prem. so more than likely it's just cos everyone's playing shite.

Talking of crass capitalism...

I'm quite gutted by that. Always liked Earle, not least cos he's the only WC goalscorer I can get to with just one degree of separation.

But 40 fucking tickets? Who has that many friends who can afford the time and expense of going to SA?

Yeah I always liked Earle, no real reason, he just comes across as a nice bloke. Just like a politician he took the chance to augment his, no doubt, reasonable wages - can no-one resist temptation?

Anyway, whoever said it above, I think you're right, it's fear of losing that is paralysing teams I reckon. Not just in the opening game but after four years of hype you rock up in the big tournament and you've simply got to perform - and the first part of that is not losing. Long range shooting, crossing etc has all been poor - have there been any good freekicks? Been some good saves I suppose, could this be the goalkeepers' world cup?

i think everything will be alright. this degree of cageyness is sure to lead to some surefire all-or-nothing crunch matches at the end of the group stage. serbia HAVE to beat germany to stand a chance. slovakia won't roll over against paraguay. denmark/cameroon/japan is by no means settled.
