that KREAYSHAWN girl got signed to sony.

so kids, get a buzz on the internet and a major will come in and offer you money.

its all a cesspit of hate. I hate lame rappers and white girls using the N word, I also hate majors not building artists and just sitting on youtube refreshing page and waiting for the next rebecca black/KREAYSHAWN type thing

argh, are people attention spans so short these days that people don't use their ears?

I'm working on a Covert Coup review at the moment which covers some of the points you make 4line (can I call you that?). I'm actually with you on the content issue, its relentlessly bland ''I'm baked/in an expensive car'' stuff. Curren$y's lyrics don't really stand out on first listen, either. However, I think what he does with his flow atones for that lack of content/wit. He flows so confidently that he actually disappears a little behind the (excellent) beats on first listen, but on second, third and fourth listen I've come to see it as a brilliant technical performance on his part. I don't think he's ever had (original) beats as good as on Covert Coup, either, as good as Ski Beatz is.

I discuss some of this at greater length in this blog post on ''Blood, Sweat and Gears''.

Supposed to be reviewing 'Blackberry Kush' too. Haven't listened to it properly yet but it seems great.

Was listening to this just this morning and thinking "wow, the beats are incredible but I wished he'd set up his game" re. Curren$y. I think you could also apply your points to the Squadda B tapes as well - rappers do seem to disappear behind his beats but it really doesn't matter - the flow is so downbeat, it becomes just another texture. though I'm thinking more of "I smoke 'cos I'm not scared of Death" tape.

Re. 4lines points re. the monotony. This is one of the reasons I enjoy weird ass stuff like Lil B - just for that contrast.

Oh, and Freddi Gibbs is the fucking shit as well. Couple of amazing tracks on the Burn One "Joints" ep.

Main Attrakionz > Currensy for me by millions of miles. He's SOOOO monotonous and redundant, and his styles are very flimsy to me. Whereas MA have so much flexibility... To me, Currensy sounds like a dull East Coast imitation, whereas M.A. have no problem saying ridiculously deep things in a throwaway almost post-snap music style. I think they got that from Lil' B, but they're much more mature/serious (depending on how you look at it) than him.

Also, the intro to the Sea Things remix of "On Deck" has one of the best melodies I've heard since the Mad Decent remix of "Patna Dem".

MAIN ATTRAKTIONZ ARE ALMOST GOOD but at the same time almost awful. its indie music. classsicly indie. lo-fi clud rap dog im fucking with that hahahhaha the amateurishness grates with me. theres always a sense of teenagers playing at making music which sometimes i enjoy and somtimes i dont. the stoner gang one on the blackberry kush always feels like this a lot. like (actually think its spaceghostpurrp) they are playing at making a trap beat rather than making a trap beat. do you understand what i mean?
curren$y particulalry on covery coup can mayb be described as east coast revivalism but its so bautfully done i dont begrudge him for it.

That new Nas - have to say I find it a bit dull. The rapping is good, beat is forgettable... its no 'Made U Look', that's for sure (which used that 80s break-loop sound to much better effect). I dunno, though, I'm just not really into post-Illmatic/It Was Written Nas anyway. Perhaps it will grow on me?

That Kool Keith is a definite grower (except it grew on me while I was listening to it the first time), just weird enough to be interesting/engaging.

Luka I can see what you mean about 'Stoner Gang' but personally I think they pull it off. I was surprised at how good Squadda/Mondre sound over that kind of beat (that kind of beat with a distorted Main Attrakionz/Spaceghostpurrp twist to it). Much more convincing than the wannabe-Waka tunes on ''Goblin''.

To me Curren$y doesn't feel region specific in a funny way. I can see the East Coast influence on his flow, but there's also that Southern drawl, and the way that plays into/effects the flow (no East Coast rapper that I've heard manages to sound so simultaneously lazy and skillful!). There's also, of course, a laid-back smoothness to his rapping which puts me more in mind of the West Coast. I can totally understand people finding him bland... But I don't think he IS bland. And he makes great music.

yah i dunno, im not ready to offer any dfinitive opinion on MA havent spend enough time with them and maybe i never will, thres only so many hours in the day. the mumbling doesent do thm any favours in my opinion. danny browns verse is corny but the lvel of rapping is so much higher thats its embaressing. i dont need everyone on to be a rapping genius but i like to at least be able to hear what theyre saying not just some incoherent disenegaged mumbling.

Ironically, on 'Cloud Skatin'' Danny somewhat ruins the effect of his own verse by doing the OPPOSITE of mumbling (i.e. the stupid cartoonish 'Hybrid' voice).

That voice (similar to Eminem's ''outrageous!'' accents) works on a number of his tracks (''The Hybrid'') but I generally prefer it when he stops doing it.

Lately I've been listening to 2pac and Master P/No Limit more than any contemporary rap music.

I was listening to some of those No Limit reissues recently. Was never a fan at the time, but listening now, quite struck by just how truly terrible they were.

edit: especially Master P - you'd be hard pushed to find a worse successful rapper IMO.

this one, for one

I'm the opposite of crackerjack. I thought they were shit at the time and now I find I like loads of their stuff.

Master P is technically a shite rapper but more and more these days I find I don't really care that much about that lol

what noz wrote about being bored of people trying to craft classics, thats he much more interestd in a song that will be amazing for about 4 days and then nevere listened to again is very much how i feel. the gunplay is not a classic but its a good song that will last a good 4 days to b replaced by other exciting songs with comparable shelflives.
