sixth place FRANCE
fifth place VIETNAM
forth place LEBANON
third place ITALY
second place THAILAND
first place INDIA

thats horribly unfair but i cant b botheered shuffling them around. france has incredible cheese. this is all coloured by my lifelong vegetarianism too. its also horribly unfiar to china but the thing about china is as well as amazing food they have some of th nastiest things anyones ever put in their mouth. japan is the only country ive never eaeten a single bad meal though so they must be top ten easy. i will do a revisd list on th off chance that this thread takes off.

i don't get how this is a world cup - you've got to put them in groups and stuff and do quarter-/semi-finals and everything. this is just a list!

edit: i do pretty much agree with you though. china wouldn't be anywhere near for me, i cannot stand chinese food

brilliant thread idea. have often discussed this with friends.

Lebanon/Syria definitely worth a place at the top table - good call. I'd go with:

1/Japan
2/Georgia/Russia
3/France
4/Lebanon/Syria/Turkey (seems to me to be a lot of crossover in my experience betwen these cuisines)
5/China
6/Iran
7/India (prob should be higher, I know)

I've had really good chinese food very occasionally and it's been amazing but I'm tempted to knock them out in qualifying because almost all chinese restaurants in the UK are so awful. I mean, most indian restaurants in the UK are awful but if you go to Tooting or Bradford you get proper ones that are good, most kebab shops are awful but if you go to North London you get proper ockabashi that are good whereas even chinese immigrants / expats in the UK seem to eat boring bland mush when they go out.

I don't understand this phenomenon.

Following that logic through I guess I'd have to lose Britain as well. Loads of amazing stuff if it's done well, fantastic range of ingredients, traditional recipes etc at least as good as Italy if it's done well but it almost never is.

You can't have Georgia/ Russia! That's like having, erm, hang on....Jamaica/ UK. OK it's not.

But Georgian food is lovely and Russian food is crap. Dill with everything. Gah.

In the final for me would be Italy vs. Greece/Turkey/Lebanon (i'm a food philistine i think and i can't really tell the difference between these three)

India narrowly being knocked out in the semis and winning the 3rd place play-off against Thailand

Nah, it's great. Moscow and St Petersburg were two of the best places I've ever eaten. Though much of it was Georgian, hence the conflation in my mind....

i've been told I look French a lot before. And eastern European, though not speciifcally Russian. I shall treasure that.

Food in Lebanon itself was surprsingly disappointing I found. Syria was much better, thoguht that's just proabbly luck of the draw

In lebanon - stuff liek in leb restaurants in london, but i'v ehad better in west london to be honest. syrian similar, but more fruit (or so i found anyway), and slightly better, but that's only a selection of restaurnats anyways. i'll bet the home cooking is awesome.

ah, i see. what do you do for said lebanese family?

georgian food - best thing is walnut and garlic paste inside fried strips of aubergine - amazing. caviar, obviously. lots of nice stews. horse, i think.

fact: 'bistro' is Russian for 'quickly', ors oemthing. Form the Russian conquest of Paris in the 19th century, and hurrying up waiters.

Yeah, Georgian, Armenian, proably Uzbeki or whatever - all great. Russian food itself is awful, tho. I spent a year there as a student and mainly ate in McDonalds cos evertyhing else was so greay and bland. Also McDonald's had clean toilets.
