As far as I'm aware a lot of mega budget movies have failed this summer so maybe the bubble has burst and we'll get more 'interesting' films at the cinema going forward?

I rewatched "Avengers Endgame" recently and it cannot possibly get better than that as far as superhero movies are concerned so

Strange film Oppenheimer. The first hour or so consists of sequences that fall somewhere between normal scenes and extended montages. Like a bunch of trimmed to the bone cuts sped through under one continuous orchestral score. The first actual scene, I'd say, is the Trinity test, which comes after an hour or so, and which is undoubtably great.

Throughout, the bomb bits are the best bits. The bomb bits and the ensuing political drama around Oppenheimer are the two main threads and they go a bit awkward together. Especially since Nolan insists on elevating both to maximum cinematic grandeur. He plays the cosmic existential notes with the bomb bits, then dips his toes in the horror of the fallout in Hiroshima/Nagasaki, the scale of death, and then suddenly we have to engage ourselves--with the same loftiness--in the character drama centered around the hearing for a security clearance revocation. Then back to the cosmic tragedy for the final note.

Then there are many secondary threads, which you could take or leave. Including some involuntarily comical bits--Oppenheimer uttering the sanskrit line as Florence Pugh descends on his cock.

But worth seeing just for the bomb test imo.

I've noticed this production style more and more lately where the film seems like one long trailer for itself. The first hour was like that. It's very uncomfortable to watch because it feels simultaenously hasty and awfully slow.

The trailers I saw were poor, Matt Damon saying things like "This is the most important thing in the history of the world!", but I'm curious to see the film. The last Nolan I saw was The Dark Knight Rises, which was the worst I've seen of his.

I have no idea why people are so excited about 'Barbie', it looks pretty shit to me from the trailer.

I was in my drawing class last night and numerous people were talking about how excited they were to see it. The two most excited were gay/had "They"pronouns so maybe it's the camp aspect?
didn't know you were into drawing? can i see some?

Nothing I'm all that proud of but i'm trying to let go of the notion that I have to be "good" at it or there's no point (n.b. i can't let go of this notion)

These aren't from my class they're things I did at home just trying to draw from a book. It's really hard. Look how wrong these are.

But yeah like I said before, it's more about the act of doing it. The steady struggle to make something crap a bit better. When I actually sit down and do it I find it very absorbing.

i hate nolan.

barbie looks amazing. the design is pretty tremendous. gerwig doesnt know how to tell a story smoothly, which little women made obvious (but then neither does nolan, and people think its clever). she crowbars her feminist message into the film, its totally unsubtle, and im sure for some people that means its 'subversive', i wanted a good time, something like the lego movie (as far as movies about toys go), not something so heavy handed - it tries to do too much i think, to be a barbie and mattel endorsment, to be a critique, to be meta, to be sincere, to be fun, to be totally on the nose about The Patriarchy. all worthwhile stuff, and its done with slick hollywood economy, but the themes are right there in your face, not integrated into the narrative.

also, the best lines and performances came from ryan gosling and america ferrara, not margot robbie, which was surprising. ken even got a full song, which barbie didnt.

i might also just be the wrong audience.
