I just want to point out a little detail: your list ends in 2020, but that's exactly the point when the real spike happened. So it's precisley the last couple of years when all the historic immigration records were broken with roughly one million newcomers arriving each year:

Yeah, I know it went really nuts in 2022, when movement restrictions were lifted after the covid years - that was the first graph I could find easily that went back to the early 90s and showed that, as recently as that, the UK was a net exporter of people.

But yeah, the idea that immigration like we've had in the last couple of years is historically typical is obviously absurd.

The leader of France’s mainstream conservatives was booted out of the party after enraging colleagues with his call for an electoral pact with the far-right party of Marine Le Pen.

Eric Ciotti was stripped of his membership of the centre-right Les Républicains by the party’s executive committee on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, the power struggle gripping LR took a farcical turn when Ciotti shuttered party headquarters in what his opponents said was an attempt to thwart his removal.

Ciotti said he had locked the Paris building for security reasons following “threats received and disorder” on Tuesday.

The party executive was due to hold an emergency meeting there on Wednesday afternoon. Many of its senior members were baying for Ciotti’s dismissal after he called for an electoral alliance with the Rassemblement National, the party led by Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, ahead of snap elections on June 30. They met in a nearby building instead and voted unanimously to exclude him from the party.

LR politicians rounded on Ciotti for making the party a laughing stock.

@yyaldrin here's the EU punishing one of its member states for failing to uphold the rights of asylum seekers.

"Hungary has been ordered to pay a €200m (£169m) fine for its refusal to uphold the rights of asylum seekers in what was described as an “unprecedented” breach of EU law by the bloc’s highest court.
The European court of justice in Luxembourg also ordered Budapest to pay €1m a day until it complies with EU laws guaranteeing refugees the right to claim asylum inside Hungarian borders."

Oh, so this is why Eastern Europe was brought into the EU; to soak up asylum seekers before they got to the big boss countries!

Apparently Germany are within their rights to do this because Albania is not officially in a bad enough state to justify fleeing. I have no idea why the UK disagrees with them.

It's part of the UK liberals' conceit that the rest of the world a complete toilet and everyone should legitimately claim asylum from the benighted state of being abroad.

Nice attempt at Kraut-bashing, but Germany already hosts more refugees than any other EU country - well over two million, more than twice as many as the next on the list, Poland.

And while I'm sure life in Albania isn't a bed of roses for most people, it is not currently either in a state of civil war or being invaded by a neighbour, unlike Syria, Iraq or Ukraine, where most of Germany's asylum seekers come from, so it seems fairer to call them economic migrants rather than refugees.

But the hollowness of your position is revealed by how quickly you flip around to take any view you think scores a hit against teh libtardz. Germany, and therefore the EU, is xenophobic for not accepting unlimited numbers of Albanian immigrants, although naturally some of them will be doctors, nurses or other trained professionals, which (per you) Germany would be guilty of "poaching" if it were to accept.

But this is all standard Biscuitology. Israel isn't racist for deliberately killing thousands of Gazan civilians while describing them as subhumans worthy only of extermination, but Egypt is racist for not accepting two million refugees with open arms. And so on and so forth.

Yes, it's bizarre that refugees from Ukraine are attempting to entire the EU via Hungary rather than, say, the Republic of Ireland, isn't it?

Nobody "brought" Hungary into the EU; they applied to join, because (at the time) they felt the advantages outweighed the responsibilities. Orban - a man after your own heart - clearly feels otherwise, or is at any rate trying to enjoy the former while shirking the latter.

France’s four main leftwing parties have agreed to form a “New Popular Front” (NPF) to contest the snap election, as the far-right leader Marine Le Pen said she would seek a “national unity government” if her National Rally (RN) wins.

The Socialist party (PS), Greens, Communists and France Unbowed (LFI), led by the hard-left firebrand Jean-Luc Mélenchon, will campaign on a common platform and field a single joint candidate in each of the 577 parliamentary constituencies.
