Not to confuse mulitple threads, but the Caretaker's point on memory (loss) and melancholia, for example, could never been made in a single. It needs an album to tell the whole thing in an observable way. Albums are only useless if they do not serve their point.
that’s cheating because ambient’s just any old shit, doesn't count
how much of this is informed by sonics and how much by the lyrics and abstract idea of the album? pr companies and critics have presumably created a narrative surrounding the album, is your enjoyment genuinely reflected in the music or have you superimposed it afterwards?

The main problem Im having with this thread is in the cataloguing all the ways Barty is wrong. Its impressive in a way, this rich tapestry of error he's weaved.
Or you got it on tape so you can't skip tracks. you just have to sit there, through all the songs you don't like, until after a while theyve grown on you and now they're your favourites. You young people know nothing of this.
Barty has grown up in a world of mp3s, happy slapping and political correctness gone mad.
How much music do you listen to as if it were just noise waves? This whole music-thing works because generally one assumes the sonics to mean something -- and sometimes precisely this improbable idea becomes its (only) meaning (Xenakis etc).
'Revolver'
poor bastard, i've been subjected to joni mitchell and david bowie all at once. i don't know if i'll be able to stomach too much more.
tomorrow never knows vs revolver
which is the better artistic statement?

If you take as a starting point the perfectly reasonable idea that there are things a musician or a group of musicians might wish to do that can't be done over the course of a single song, then the album seems to be inevitable, although as thirdform points out its actual length was initially dictated by material and commercial considerations.
Say you get a good hold of that mood which is called feeling sorry for yourself. That is a lush mood. You get a good grip on that and you want to milk it.
