One thing I don't like is his films have got longer, mega long run times, but that applies to a lot of new films.

All of those 70s guys were insane film nerds, especially Scorsese and I get the impression even more especially Peter Bogdanovic. I kinda wonder if they remember the minutiae of film noir now.... also, now this links to the psychoanalysis thread cos of Bogdanovic's role in Sopranos

Bogdanovich apparently pissed a bunch of people off referring to his own films like he was going around mastering other people's styles. He'd refer to "my Ford picture", "my Welles picture", etc.

ok i got to the rw of shutter island and as the biggest scorsese fan on this forum i will hand it to yall on this one... i truly have never understood the hype around this film.... it is so silly and stupid... literally a make a wish kid ass movie.... there is some interesting post ww2 mk ultra shit going on, but the bulk of the film is centered on an overly telegraphed twist and fantasy that makes it hard for me to take the film seriously most the time. even my guy leo, easily the greatest actor to ever live, is pretty whatever in this film, hes pretty lazy here, even if the material isnt giving him much to work with, just constantly turning it up and doing ACTING. again tho, while i dont like this film, and find it to be bottom 5 scorsese, it is still better than 99 percent of shit that gets pumped out these days. i really dont know what people see in this film, i assume dissensus is not a fan either

There are a lot of films where the twist is SPOILER he or she (the protagonist) is dead, or the slightly watered down version where they are in fact the very bad guy they were themselves looking for.
Off the top of my head...

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
Carnival of Souls
Angel Heart
The Sixth Sense
Shutter Island

What else? It's practically a genre on its own. And why not, it's a good twist? Thing is, like a punchline to a joke, the more you hear it the less effective it is, which I'd probably why those films progressively get worse.

I watched Killers of The Flower Moon the other day. Weirdly flat film that takes a potentially interesting story, represents it with gorgeous sets and great actors and completely removes any tension or excitement from it. It feels like one of those shitty reenectments they put in to illustrate cheap documentaries, it's just some stuff that happens, a series of events that follow each other sequentially and yet utterly fail to create any kind of story. I feel like he was stung by criticisms of his glamorising criminals so he removed their personalities and those of everyone else too just for good measure. Really strange film. Post-good or something.

Put the aviator on Friday night cos I wanted something like wolf of wall street, but not that. Disappointing, but only watched 30 mins. Films about films notoriously don't work well.

Corpsey

I dont think so. the entire movie is like the first 15 minutes of goodfellas, an introductory montage but for 3 hours.
I watched a clip from it the other day and every single shot in this little montage had a sort of zoomy swipey camera move, it was like he couldn't let himself not have a shot with some little woosh thing in it to communicate "this is energetic and coked up"

Cue the rolling stones

It has a film within a film element. I stuck it back on, even the bit where he's trying to defend the outlaw against the censors is poorly directed. Martin very off his game on this film I think. He can't seem to do "period" well unless it's gangsters?
