Seems Labour would rather be facing inertia than back stepping and electing a new leadership team. Pretty tragic given the levels of gimpdom from the present govt, self sabotaging even

I don’t see how the party can unite its factions. Every element is either intolerant of or shouting at the other, if they were neighbours you’d send a noise abatement order

Gestalt work on finding common interests that could forward policies, policies in line with the Covid soaked, NHS compromised, education farce, zero hours contracts island we live on, are absent and nothing of significance looks forthcoming

The impression I get from Twitter is that an awful lot of leftists in this country would love nothing better than another thumping Tory majority at the next election. Because then they'll have been right about Starmer, you see.

Yes, that's what centrists wanted with Corbyn – and indeed worked hard to achieve – so naturally they see the left hating on Starmer in the same light. Whereas the left are more... disappointed, disillusioned and angry, not least by Starmer's duplicitous switch from broad church unity candidate to factional right wing stooge.

If he wins a General Election, well, that's better than the Tories winning, especially the current Tories, so it will certainly be a relief to everyone on that score. And the Labour left will campaign for Labour to win. But no one expects Starmer to win. And even if he somehow does, no one expects him to change from being the useless status quo establishment dummy he's shown himself to be.

That's bollocks, though. I remember a palpable excitement in the run-up to the 2017 election when Labour had that late surge in support - lots of people, whatever their personal opinion of Corbyn, felt that it might just be possible that Labour would win. Of course they lost, and (contrary to what a lot of people like to think) not by a particularly narrow margin. Worth remembering, too, that May would have hung on to her majority had not 600,000 natural Tory voters opted for Ukip instead.

(And to pre-empt you: yes, I am aware some Labour party staffers said in private chat that they hoped to lose. These people were in charge of an election fund equal to a whopping 1% of Labour's total budget. The idea that they, by themselves, prevented a Labour win by spending that tiny amount of money in a certain way is ridiculous. By the same token, the LOTO's office also ordered funds to be taken away some non-Corbynite MPs in marginal seats and given instead to loyalist MPs in ultra-safe seats.)

2019 was a different matter because it was such a foregone conclusion, and while there may have been a certain amount of "I told you so" going on afterwards, I think you'd be hard pushed to find anyone in any faction of Labour who was actually pleased with the result.

It has been two years though. You can't moan about the previous leader forever. Eventually you're inadvertently making the argument for new leadership as you're presenting yourself as incapable of taking the party anywhere else.

Except that the result in 2017 wasn't just deflated by party staffers doing what they could to sabotage the election campaign. The PLP and Labour right had been publicly attacking the leadership at every opportunity for two years to try and be "proved right". So the largest popular vote since Blair's 1997 landslide no doubt did come as a shock. And they showed their "palpable excitement" for that by getting a whole lot worse.
