I am not going to come out to bat and defend him but some of this is in part a reaction to Corbyn's perceived lack of patriotism. Actually read it now, it says as much.

Personally, not bothered about the flag as such but a more worrying thing for me is when they start channelling nationalistic sentiment into policy.

Just to be clear, a lot of stuff in that document strikes me as comically stupid - not least the top down stage management of "authenticity" - FFS CAN YOU NOT SPOT THE CONTRADICTION but patriotism as such, I don't hate it. You have to be give voice to a degree of positive sentiment about the country but I would guess that whatever Labour eventually comes up with will seem fairly wooden and hackneyed.

Wish I still had my copy of Billy Bragg's book on the subject - was an attempt to craft an interesting, historical rooted, patriotic vision that lent to the Left.

Aside from all this being completely reprehensible they can't even win with it. Who will win the battle of the patriots in the UK? Who can, right now, enact the sort of shit that these people want? (Whether posturing or not).

Can Keith seriously think he can win people over by being more patriotic than the Tories?

Getting Brexit done, bring the country together, Major Tom was such a hero, difficult times, we remember our dead, great leader, need to move forward, Britannia rules the waves, Winston Churchill, the playing fields of eton, great British Bake Off, our fish are happier...

Another of the great unfairnesses of UK politics, isn't it? That the Tories will always be far better than Labour at sounding and looking patriotic, even while they sell the country down the river.

a genuine question: what does Britain have in 2021 that's worth celebrating?

Like, I've grown up Very Online and that's maybe part of it but I've never felt any particularly affinity to Scottishness or Britishness and "patriotism" is such a weird concept to me. I don't look at things or people and think, wow you're excellent this makes me proud to be British, I just think those things are great and well done to the people who made them regardless of where they are from or whatever?

Scottish man Boyle gave an answer to that question in 2012 that many people found compelling and affecting and its interesting to see how that vision has kind of collapsed post olympics but also retained some of its strength in weird atavistic ways eg how the NHS workers are heroes but dont actually deserve better pay or working conditions

i cant think of any other recent attempts to give a serious answer to that question but that was a serious answer. history, landscape, culture, politics, law
