problem is if you warp too much in ableton the sound quality gets too degraded.

I'm not sure what you mean by that.
If you want to do both a better job of snapping it to the grid, and make it sound better, you want to set warp markers at as small as intervals as you can be bothered to do.
On that Surfwork track, for example, I believe I set markers at every 2 beats.
