i mean it's why I'm not a music critic right. You fundamentally have to be patriotic about your field. Cos either the new is worth paying attention to at all times, or the new has to reference the old. The former can means you end up bigging up any old dross for poptimist value (and that is what the project of poptimism was, not merely pop music but championing the new products of the industry at all times.) The latter more than not turns you into a j dilla real hip hop evangelist. It's not a dualism i like to work in.
