Wright’s mother, Katie Wright, told reporters at the scene that she had received a call from her son on Sunday afternoon telling her that police had pulled him over for having air fresheners dangling from his rear-view mirror, illegal in Minnesota. She could hear police tell her son to get out the vehicle, she said.

our police are so screwed up, lots of normal, decent cops and as history shows, lots of bad actors as well. the victim had an outstanding warrant out on him, and apparently leapt back into his car to drive off. in cases like that, why can't cops just shoot out the tires instead of the driver?

The officer who fatally shot a 20-year-old Black man outside Minneapolis Sunday appeared to have inadvertently pulled out her gun instead of a taser, police said.

"This appears to me, from what I viewed in the officer's reaction and distress immediately after, that this was an accidental discharge that resulted in the tragic death of Mr. Wright," Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon told reporters Monday.

I was just gobsmacked at the pettiness of some states (but presumably not others) banning air fresheners, as much as anything. Definitely one for the alt-right memesters and their "Yer got a loicense for that?" idea of the UK being ludicrously over-regulated.

Honestly I don´t understand this at all. I don't understand why police should open fire on anyone who is running away... possibly if they wanted for murder or something, but an outstanding warrant could be for a relatively minor transgression right? To me the calculus of overall good vs bad says that if someone runs away cos they haven't paid a fine or whatever, it's simply not worth opening fire in public. Arguably it´s not worth chasing them in a car on a public road either cos of the danger that poses to innocent passers-by, it seems the priorities are all wrong.

I´m seeing people saying that the warrant was for not attending a court case... cos they sent the summons to the wrong address. If confirmed then that is exactly what I was talking about.

These cops are psychotic. Why would you not just let him get away and catch up to him another time or shoot the tyres out like Leo said?

"Shit! This guy might end up in court at a later date than hoped! I'm gonna have to kill him!"

I think, in fairness, they just see "Outstanding Warrant" on their screen or whatever... but that´s exactly my point really, unless you KNOW he´s a multiple murderer, what is the justification in opening fire in public, or even engaging in a high speed chase on a public road? In general you see in US police things where they chase a burglar or whatever and shout "stop or I´ll shoot" - is that really how we want it to be, that the police can shoot a fleeing suspect in the back just to catch them?

There was a similar case in Philadelphia last week that doesn't seem to have attracted any attention even though it seems a wee bit fishy - traffic stop, suspect shot dead by 5 officers, multiple entry wounds in his back, yet somehow he shot an "officer in the foot" ( I suspect the officer got a bit excited and managed to discharge the firearm whilst removing from his holster )

Note the headline only mentions the officer being shot, doesn't mention that they blasted the "suspect" to death

Apparently the burning issue for which the cop considered it appropriate to use a taser - bear in mind that even tasers can kill people, of course - was an unpaid fine of less than $400 for some (presumably pretty minor) weed-related offence.

Mr. Chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison when he is sentenced in the coming weeks but is likely to receive far less time. The presumptive sentence for second-degree murder is 12.5 years, according to Minnesota’s sentencing guidelines, although the state has asked for a higher sentence.

I've gotten shoved, pushed and arrested by these thugs in uniforms.
There was a good read by an X cop who said basically ' Don't talk to them. They don't see you as you are. They see us vs Them.
