I don't know. I don't think it's new, it's a recent discovery for me. Great, though, isn't it?

Skanna were a second tier jungle act who had a few great hardcore and darkcore tracks and then went into the Bukem style (eventually too far). I remember this melody from Bukem mixes at the time and for some reason they got their act together and remastered their entire back catalog for Spotify. This is not Top Gear jungle, it's not about engineering and 'breaks', it's just good because of the sound texture and melody and atmosphere. 1994 ambient jungle.

He engineered and mixed it. Knowing Goldie's working methods, that basically means he made it, right?

yeah goldie the genius of jungle. but this ain't as immediate or wicked as any of the other jungle bits. it's been going round my head that that genius/scenius thing is probably due for cancelling. basically if you're a faceless person from the scene then you're not a genius. you're part of something bigger than you. takes a certain kind of person to be a genius. this is not acceptable to 2020 surely?

Ed Rush/No-U-Turn

Some cavernous late jungle. This was the only original music to come out of this scene after 1995, and only this label for a few months nailed it. That's my contention. I love the heavy, hard, dramatic sound they patented, and ended up loathing all their copyists. It's where scenius breaks down, Woops.

This is Teutonic, crepuscular, weird, like prime 93 darkcore, not like the consummate tech-step pretensions.

Boymerang

Having said that, this one did nail it, in a different way: a kind of angular, neurotic, stiff-necked English funk, like Freeez with a migraine.
