Timbaland was more of a genius I reckon but the Neptunes have made more music I love. I was working on a Neptunes top 50 for a while but never bothered finishing it. It leaned heavily towards their more sentimental sega side e.g.
I'd say Timbaland takes it because of his synths, adds another dimension The Neptunes don't really have. A lot of their stuff's percussion with a few weird sounds thrown in whereas Timbo can do that and more.
Best JT track imo. Another one like Amerie 1 Thing where raw as fuck drums are the main focus of the instrumental. Perfect contrast to the sweet vocals. Kinda like Montell Jordan with the sweet n sour thing. It's a powerful songwriting trick.
Part of my prejudice is based on being 17/18 when the Neptunes hit the big time and absolutely dominated radio/MTV for ages. So many songs from the era which I associate with parties and being young (and drunk).
Timbaland had some hits at that time (Get your freak on, cry me a River, ugly) but I was probably slightly too young (and provincial) for his golden era.
this reminds me that there's a really good book about New Orleans rap stuff called Triksta
by Nik Cohn, he doesn't just investigate but becames manager for a young rap guy and gets involved, it's great
