I assume that the term in this context derives from Marxism, but maybe it is even more specific than that (John?).

The term 'neoliberal' has come to serve a blanket purpose in left rhetoric presently; in fact I'd argue that is has usurped the function that 'neocon' used to serve. The perspective John is describing is basically a conservative one, 'neoliberal' and 'neocon' are just a garnish in this context.

I think you can be a non neo-liberal conservative though. The Church of England / Women’s Institute, community jumble sale end of things. Like you can see the advantages of civic pride and libraries and a safety net.

That's why i said 'if you actually want to comprehend'... I don't disagree that it can sometimes do this but i think it's in the nature of new ideas arising in public consciousness to accumulate into these insufferable grey blobs before things break up and get more refined (privilege, mental health stuff, virtue signalling etc etc)

I think the term is irritating when it’s used to try and mitigate the effects of individual harm. Like if you are the victim of a crime it really isn’t a lot of help to suggest that this is a structural issue and not the fault of the perp.

Of course you can, but the focus on personal responsibility in this context is a broadly conservative one.

So 'structural' is basically an analytical (and now also rhetorical) tool that is contested. What was interesting in the immediate wake of BLM was the extent to which corporations and businesses all released statements acknowledging the existence of structural racism and their role in it as a reflex, as if the political argument didn't even exist.
