The Meaning of the '90s

The "true" future, to me, seems to be completely weightless and frictionless, gliding through space at high speed.
Another thing that strikes me is it feels like a natural extension, it doesn't feel forced or artificial. It's like the tendril of a plant unfolding, leaves leaning toward the light. That pastoralism someone mentioned in the YouTube comments. It's all wide, open spaces, lone spacecraft etc.

No Man's Sky looks to have a bit of it, but the art style isn't right.

I think as I didn't get to go to a club till 1999 probably that most of this music just seems like my childhood as opposed to the future. But the computer games still resonate.
There's the future and "The Future", imo, and the latter's formed in the childhood imagination. The stuff I'm talking about in this thread's very much the latter. It's a mythology I can't separate from feelings of childlike wonder because it can only take shape in the mind of the child.

There's what I think might actually happen based on what I observe around me, but there's also this Garden of Eden-esque vision that simultaneously feels like an authentic memory of somewhere I once was or was on course to reach.

znore's bit on not literalising myth and metaphor comes to mind too,

"But the fact that a thing is not literal does not make it untrue. Blake, for instance, was completely uninterested in historical proofs of the life of Jesus. For Blake, these searches for certainty miss the entire point of Jesus' mission. Jesus is the Imagination. It is in the worst way sacrilegious to attempt to prove his historical existence or to prove the literal reality of his words and deeds. Narrow proof is perniciously put before eternal imagination. Likewise, the Atlantis myth or metaphor should not be literalized."

it's why in 100 years time Xenakis will be awarded a higher more deserved place in the electronic music pantheon than Kraftwerk who were still too rooted in structures of romantic classical music.

I wasn't arguing the imagination's futuristic. I was saying the mythical conception of the future rooted in my childhood isn't literal and probably never will be, but somehow still feels "true".

I've never argued that futurism is intellectually pleasant - in fact in the case of say, Stockhausen, its even unpleasant for me. Though there is a lot of futuristic music I find pleasant, Xenakis, free jazz, experimental speedcore, darkside jungle, etc.

It is what it is. It isn't there to be valourised, into eternity to do so hints at romanticism, the least futurist gesture possible.

Sure, that's romanticism. That's not futurism though.

Post-dubstep 1, Luka 0.

We'll be back after half time.

Yes, which is what I'm talking about. I'm not talking about the actual future or futurism. I'm talking about a particular fantasy of the future rooted in stuff I encountered as a child in the 90s.

If we're talking about the actual future, I think it's going to be a disaster. Some combination of the worlds depicted in Children of Men and Soylent Green with the veneer of an Apple Store.

We're back after half time! and in less than 30 seconds post-dubstep has scored an own goal deflected off the knee of James Blake. What a spectacular header from Reynolds, there was no time for Blake to even realise what was happening. What was Alexander version doing there in defence? Herbert and Stan were nonexistent! Look at them. completely dazed, all in the 6 yard box! Core, Luka compound are lucky this time around. They will have to really step up though and not slauch on the pitch like they are suffering from a disastrous hangover! It's not 1983 lads!
