Got out among some alders during dusk this evening visiting a client. Sun was a particularly surreal blended tone of amber/pearl, cloudy haze drifting lightly enough to both see and obscure. Alders have been coppiced for decades, so the bases were broad with cut back and new growth twisted upward in gothic spirals

The repetition of these layers of swirls, broken up by the odd brook and a boardwalk, created a depth trick of the eye. Thought parts were beeches but wrong. Flask of tea and a couple of jaffa cakes sat on logs, all civilised. Think it was being out in woods again after so long within the narrower confines of lockdown (yet that still undersells it)

me and a friend took a train out of the city to have a walk in the woods around Babelsberg today. they call it the Hollywood of Germany. very photogenic part of the country. they have some big film studios there. the place is teaming with palaces and other fancy bits of old architecture. we stuck to the woods mostly and managed to spot a load of deer and even some wild boar.

The Tree of Fertility in Massa Marittima, Fonte dell'Abbondanza (1265)
Completely off topic, but that reminds me of this Sikh Temple I visited in India in 2017, Hazur Sahib.
Basically went on a pilgrimage to it.
It's beautifully done out in marble with inlaid illustrations.
There's all the usual things you might expect in these illustrations - mosaics, birds, deer, flowers....
But what's a bit odd is that alongside these, there's the odd panel dedicated to weapons, including detailed pistols...
In some ways, it's not odd at all, particularly considering the martial history of Sikhism, but it was a bit of head-turn moment for me, not seen that before.
