Scary bridge over the River Mersey. I tried to walk that whole river from Manchester to Warrington but had to stop cos its a pain, no access by the Riverside for vast swathes.

I like a good bridge. We live about a mile away from the longest one in Europe. It´s a strange, snaking, hump-backed sea monster of a bridge that shines brightly in the sun, or else fades mysteriously into the haze if it's raining or misty. I love going over it too, looking into the glistening water on either side, one day I´ll probably crash doing that. Especially as you get close to the far side where you can often see loads of flamingos.
Liza has a friend from Russia who moved to Portugal and his boyfriend is this incredibly bad-tempered French guy who just fucking flies off the handle at the smallest provocation. When he'd just moved here he gave us a lift home one time and we're on the motorway about a mile from our house driving down the river but he takes the wrong turn and gets funnelled towards the bridge, and then he can't avoid it and he's getting more and more annoyed, muttering under his breath and then just full on shouting and swearing. Cos from being a five minute journey, you gotta go over the whole bridge which is about 20k and then it comes out on the motorway and you can't turn round for some distance on that. One minute we are a couple of kilometres from home, then suddenly he's accidentally added an extra 60k to the journey and he's going fucking mental, just shouting the whole way with us sitting in the back trying not to piss ourselves. The prick.

It's quite nice to walk around at this end too, there is some quite nice scenery that feels very different in different weather.

Lisbon is bookended by two bridges. At one end the Vasco da Gama one which is long and low. At the other end you have the 25th April Bridge which is not nearly so long but much much higher. The view is fantastic from the top of this one; driving out from Lisbon it leads you straight to Jesus, the other way you can see the whole city below you, and if you look along the Tagus you can see for miles in either direction with toy boats on the glittering (again but it really is the only word for it) blue glass river.
At either end you can walk around beneath it and gaze upwards at the structure - my girlfriend took some great pictures from underneath in which it looked like some kind of modernist work by Anthony Carro or something stabbing into the crystal clear blue sky.

Yeah when you're on the other side it's the best landmark to orient yourself - cue loads of "We have turned our back on Jesus" or "Finally we have come back to Jesus" etc

There is a weird little bridge in Sacavem I'd like to get a pic of - it's blocked off now and I guess it was just a footbridge over a stream that flows into the Tagus - but for some reason it has this huge arch above it that seems ridiculously large and out of proportion.

I'm from Fall River, Massachusetts, a city with a large Portuguese population. It was a long-running joke growing up that every time we'd drive over the Braga Bridge, my dad would say "This is the longest bridge in the world. Goes from Somerset, Massachusetts to Portugal".
