The importance of "bad" music/art

the pleasure I take from eg dance music is not the same as the pleasure I take from singer-songwriter type stuff. You could argue the former is inauthentic and lacks soul but that's not really the point, just as the point of the latter isn't about groove and texture

its not though is it, it's just a different level of judgement

sure it is, because that different level of judgement doesn't always make sense. it's like criticizing ice cream for being a terrible dinner choice. ice cream is a dessert, and should be judged on how well it serves as a dessert, not as a dinner.

that what they represent at a higher level, the complex of values, the feeling structure of the work, you can judge to be abhorrent

but to make even those judgements, don't you first need to understand what the thing is and what it's trying to accomplish?

It's not though. In Turkey its a snack. Baklava is a dessert.

The problem with the contextual approach of most music journalists is you can intellectually convince yourself to like anything if you can attach a subtext to it. In a way it's the pinnacle of anti-intellectualism, because it denies its very foundation of being fundamentally a relativist approach.

But the funny thing is quite a few of the sound systems themselves in LDN were run by white geezers. Jah Tubbys, Eastmans sound, etc.

Eastman is actually an interesting case in this. He was never really an 88-89 acid house guy, if you can track down the interview he did with Uncle Dugs you'll hear this.

And I think that's illustrative of the problems of dance music journalism, it has no sense of scenes peripheral to itself before a certain inauguration date.
are we talking the anthoney hart eastman nuum purist? went to his gig a couple times, was rather good + online he seems to constantly be bitter about kids using breaks/referencing rave in their music which is very fun to read

No. He was probably age 10 when Eastman of Kool fm was setting up a station and involved in running the telepathy events. Kool FM eastman was early 20s at least by that time.
