from barbados 'generally regarded as the bithplace of rum'

Cockspur is a bit rank..

actually I've been imbibing a combination of "Ryoma", a superior "Rhum Japonais", and an incredible Deutsche supermarket brand labelled "8 year Barbados Rum"

snob. if its got alcogol in it it is good

didn't want to come across as a bit snooty, but there is bit of an 'afterburn' associated with cockspur, you'll probably agree with me in the morning..

It's more of a rum that I'll take to an event where I have to share with people I don't particularly care for...

Love the Cure, definitely a top tier classic 80s band, but Morrissey's ultra-genius and the miraculous combination of him and Marr means the Smiths win this fairly easily.

What are the cure songs you like, Luka? They had some great early singles - boys dont cry, a forest etc- and Disintegration is a great album, some good later pop songs, but too much of their stuff gets bogged down in overly Joy Division indebted gloom. A lot of people say Pornography is the best album but it's such a tuneless slog.

Plus, in simple terms of coolness - robert smith is a chubby goth with smeared makeup, whereas Moz was devastatingly handsome with the best hair of the 80s. No contest there.

Few songs have the power to devastate me like I Know It's Over or That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore. Morrissey wasnt just 'trying' to sing, he was incredible singer.

The Smiths are also one of the few bands where the lyrics really matter to me, generally I dont really care about lyrics that much as long as the sound is good. They had it all.

Agree with @Benny B Well I Wonder captures a longing and a yearning that few others do. I know we’ll get our usual ‘it was all shit, everything you ever liked is wank, you mugs’ from the usual nay sayers but, as hard as it is to believe, the Smiths really were the most remarkable band for about five years. The Cure by comparison did some decent stuff but nothing as consistent as imperial phase Smiths.

But don't forget the songs
That made you cry
And the songs that saved your life
Yes, you're older now
And you're a clever swine
But they were the only ones who ever stood by you

“If I put you in a room with Robert Smith, Mark E. Smith and a loaded Smith and Wesson, who would bite the bullet first?”

“I’d line them up so that one bullet penetrated both simultaneously … Robert Smith is a whingebag."

Max Woods 1 year ago

My stepdad is a roofer and he once fixed Robert Smiths roof. Proudest moment of his life haha. Apparently he had his hair and makeup all done up but was wearing trackies and a football shirt.

I have a prejudice against the smith's cos I was a big cornershop fan as a teenager and they protested outside rough Trade cos of moz's flirtation with fascism episode early on.

A guy I work with loves the Smiths but he's cancelled them and it tears him up.

I wonder if that's common with a lot of teenage smith's fans who are now settled liberal people and they can't square it.

Yeah I suppose but moz is what made the smith's iconic? I mean Johnny Marr is a great guitarist etc, but moz is the factor in that band that is the singular factor. I would say.
