which is to say songwriting is only singularly impressive.... its not very interesting to compare songwriters imo, but with "performers", they can make songs their own, without even writing them.... dylan has long been obsessed with the the 50s american song book..... he was obviously influenced by folkies like guthrie and seeger, but thats a very short sighted influence imo.... his first few albums ok sure you can hear them there, but without buddy holly and little richard, there is no dylan.... the influences that outweigh the folkies stretch even further when you enter those mid 60s records, ok now we hear the buddy holly and little richard, but is that guthrie and seeger we hear in his lyrics? no lol thats rimbaud, thats pound, thats brecht, even homer and the old testament.... as a performer, he is constantly shifting the arragements of his songs, but what solidifies himself as a performer, and going back to one of my first points, he uncovers these american songbook records, he is a crooner in the 2010s..... it is where the sinatra and elvis influence steps in.... no one knows what songs those guys wrote, no one cares, no one knows who wrote this song, no one cares.... but we all know that its a bob dylan song
