OK, sorry I've taken a while with these.

First one, love his voice. Not so sure about the sort of very dramatic hook music. Feels quite an old thing. But his voice is so powerful, it doesn't matter. Haha I wrote that as he said "don't matter".

Yeah this is up there, I think i even prefer it to goody mob, purely based off the sound of the voice.

It's pretty aggressive though, not for everyone, I tried putting it on last night and it got a "no" straight away from my wife.

I can't really place the era, feels quite classic 1995 time, but is probably newer. No idea where they are from, sounds like new York.

2nd one, I do actually know Rick Ross, I'm pretty sure James massiah/escrow had one of his tunes in his 420 mix, which I really liked. Not heard this one before. Haven't heard the opening sample (?) before. Interesting long opening generally. The rain/thunder is actually pretty well done. Voice wise he has a good sound and delivery. Not as sure about what he's actually saying, but lost already. Feels a bit generic. The "used to see you on a screen, wonder if it was a dream" is reminiscent of biggie in his epic days.

It's a bit slow. Bit over dramatic and in love with its own seriousness. Does also have a similar confessional style to Kanye I would say, but I can't really relate to much of what he's saying, or be that bothered to find out more. The beat also quite un hip hop and pretty nice.

Of the 2, prefer the first one.

the stack bundles is mid 00s which most people consider to be the worst period of recorded music, tho it has it's unsophisticated charms.
not a million miles from the much earlier hate me now which helps set the tone for that kind of comedy belligerence and resentment

man the parts of this video with Nas up on the cross used to freak me out as a kid in a way i couldn't put into words, it was relieving to find out years latter that Diddy felt that Nas was being excessive and doing to much which coming from him THAT'S SAYING ALOT

why dont you give him something clever and indie he loves indie music i dont think hes so into bludgeoning aggression. he like whimsical fey stuff

1st one - god his voice is so annoying. varied and interesting beat, but the wrong tone of sounds for me. i like a deeper sub sound somewhere. it's a bit ploddy? very flat sound.

i genuinely think it can be a wonderful thing. like when i saw common in the early 00s or around then, he said something like everyone could rap along to the n word tonight, and i think everyone felt the spirit of inclusion and left the venue feeling like they were part of something speciaL

this all sounds nice and all but the fact that it was a Common gig at the height of his powers really has me wondering what that crowd look like and if your sentiment of inclusion was shared with others

as the middle class white lads adopting rap and the blues i mean it all part of one ugly lineage that as much as people try to address still hasn't gone away one bit, not to mention the people who write about the music look at the previous generation swear they won't repeat the same mistakes and then do so anyway

The opening verse on the 2nd one is good, its got a breathless feeling on it on first listen.

But the chorus, I dunno... Its like the beatles or something.

Listening on my phone, the sort of plinky sound is coming out very weird and overpowering.

It's better than the first one.

@catalog for some reason i thought you'd like the Them song, doseone admittedly is an acquired taste as a rapper but he's got stuff that i quite like, it all clicked for me when somebody (can't remember) who brought up Bizzy Bone from Bone thugs and how they both have similiar rapping styles (and also come from Ohio)

as for Open Mike Eagle there were a few tracks i thought of but in the end i went with that one because it's more recent and the album its off has quite the concept behind it.

Usually my go to Open Mike track is "Nightmares"
