not so much a losing your edge thing as your entire past having been catalogued, ordered, ranked,

More seriously, I think you have to have a bit of neophilia. I like this time of year as I read lots of end of year lists and go on a binge. If you've not got that love or fascination with new stuff you will feel a bit like your taste is ossifying.

Though, to your point above, I still don't reckon the internet's lossless recall can capture what it's like to be part of a scene even just as a listener, it can't capture the organic links and connections.

no of course it cant but it can put all the records that comprised the scene in a ring binder and people can dutifully go through them all

Is the frustration more about them not getting it in the same way, flattening it, no investment. or you losing a sense of authority?

So I was asking luke for something beautiful on Saturday night and the first tune he shared id already heard (because he put me onto it!) and now he’s having a mid life crisis

Yeah I guess that's life though, especially now. Though those who go through the lot are a dedicated few.

If you've ever been involved in any collecting scenes, it can get like this but things get shuffled, recontextualized and made anew. Like I'm sure I heard my Urban 12" of The Jackson Sisters very differently to how it was first heard when first cut. I'm listening to an Indian flute LP I bought on Friday from Spitalfields. It must be more than 50 years old but it's fresh as a baby's bum to me.

im obsolete. its weird though. my taste most people would say defined a generation, or several generations. but becasue i was the leading taste maker of so long my taste is now conservative by definition.

but they have to study and then try to remember things that come to you naturally. and it's highly likely they will eventually either forget those things, or move on to the next thing and leave them behind, while you'll still have the knowledge in your core. it's part of you.
