if i remember it right Barthes says that the pornographic is by nature un-erotic because it cuts off the image from any deeper levels of engagement. it says "this is what sex is, exactly this and nothing more." my idea is that modern culture machine is doing the same kind of thing by enforcing this bureaurocracy of libido, the same kind of flattened representation that says "this is how sex works, this is it" except without the explicit images.
