I kinda think James Brown, maybe more than anyone else, is hard to hear with fresh ears. His sound wasn't as ubiquitous here as it was in the 'states when I was growing up, but certainly since then with rare groove, then breaks and rap, it's the backdrop of so many things - i mean, the "funky drummer" is essential the DNA of early hardcore. Public Enemy put those breaks absolutely central. And records like "Think" became so anthemic I feel I never need to hear it again. I also think musically, a lot of the vocal hits are pretty similar/generic - funk itself is relatively simple music in a lot of ways, certainly the 45 hits that constituted 90% of rare groove.

I don't know quite what I'm trying to get at here - maybe JB is the first artist who really became postmodern - copied, sampled, remixed in an infinity of different forms, and therefore his sound saturates the background of so many other contemporary sounds, so the essential "shock of the new" is even harder to hear when you go back to the original recordings.

so much amazing stuff. one cool thing he had going: tracks that are pretty linear, not much changes through the entire song, with small blips that surge slightly for the chorus. almost like funk "rollers", to borrow a jungle/d'nb term.

More than The Beatles? Your ears are never fresh to sounds you've lived with for decades but a revisit can still prompt a spark, at least, where once your head was set ablaze by, in the case of JB, the rhythm and voice. Whilst it's no longer fresh, at least the passing of time proves its greatness in the context of both what was around then and what came afterwards. No-one was more consistently funky for so many years than JB in his prime.
