its hard to be objective at all coz i've been listening to this since i was 12 and my sister got the CD and it was one of the only ones we had. lauryn hill's bars on this still stand head and shoulders above about 100% of other hiphop for me. something authentic that cuts through.

she's standing outside a lot of hiphop conventions i think. helped by only really making tunes for about two years.

The only identity is collective identity. Solidarity with the ecosystem. The most radically anti phallic act is suicide bombing. The demolition of self in service of the collective. Like undergoing ego death on ayahuasca. Aesthetic jihad. Lesbian separatists in the 70s figured this out but they were sabotaged by CIA-planted internal strife.

What is supposed to be wrong with that song?

I've never been a fan of the Marxmen, but I do appreciate their use of Marxist themes.
I was being serious. This has zero braggadocio, a woman singing and lyrics about an everyday female concern. Would this fit the bill for 'feminine' hip hop?

Ok so the number one example of anti-phallic rap is Lauryn Hill's album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill". The classic hit from it, "That Thing", deals with objectification.

"All Hail the Queen" by Queen Latifah is another great example of feminine, feminist hip hop. The title track is full of feminist messages.
What's also anti-phallic in that album is...

you should suicide bomb dimes square
I'm not fully dedicated to the anti-phallic project, that would be Male Lesbian. I am just dedicated to make sure that the spirit of the anti-phallic qua ecological project qua anti-agentic-orientation project is not corrupted by separatist or subversive elements. In that spirit, I nominate Male Lesbian.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Would PM Dawn fit the bill?

Let's have a look at the opening shot: 5 powerful proud black women, their posture suggesting unity, solidarity—you could even call them a "swarm." When they "go their own ways" and split apart, they stay holding hands. Note also the experimental film technique of layering drawings over the footage—layering is a fundamentally phallic maneuver, because it implies "depth," i.e. "that which can be penetrated." However, their use of this "depth technology" to represent, say, a flower, is appropriated from phallic culture for anti-phallic purposes, re-centering us once again in the environment.

Don't believe me? See the sunglasses the artists wear: they show that they are merely a reflection of their surroundings. Traditional phallic culture has it that eyes are the window to the soul—more "depth ideology" nonsense. Typical phallic metaphors. They invert all these assumptions and say: At the deepest core of my soul is merely my environment, my ecological collectivity.

Unfortunately the Queen metaphor is incredibly problematic and phallic. Latifah merely plays out the old egocentric status games while performing feminist lip service. True ecological rap would not center one "genius" individual, but would be based on collectivity
Good point. But I was mistaken, I meant to refer to the song "Ladies First". There is no title track on that album.

The collective is not opposed to the self. They should be mutually supportive, but they often aren't. I don't need to negate myself to support the collective.

I would argue that yes, PM Dawn do count as feminine hip hop. I've always thought of them as Drake's predecessors, and Drake combines phallic and anti-phallic elements. I quite like PM Dawn though. Very beautiful mix of harmony and laid back rhymes. I don't know their lyrics well enough to comment on whether the lyrics count as feminine though.

IDK if the Marxmen count as feminine hip hop, but I will say that if they do, they're still not very good music.

For me, one of the best examples of feminine hip hop is "All I Need (Remix)" because it's also one of the most romantic hip hop songs. More romantic than anything Drake ever said. It speaks of a romance beyond gender.

IMO the concept is firstness is incredibly phallic i.e. agentically and not ecologically oriented. "Ladies First" merely inverts a hierarchy; it doesn't subvert the concept of a hierarchy.

We could talk about the phallic quality of number systems (all invented by dead white guys) but that's a separate conversation

I think you are perhaps not being as objective about phallic and anti phallic culture as you might be. It's okay to like Queen Latifah but someone who has self proclaimed her royalty demanding hierarchy is phallic, you must admit.

Anyway, congrats on reaching the 50 page thread mark. A non trivial accomplishment. Of course, I am uniquely prodigious in this department, having secured a 100+ page milestone early in my board career. But many posters, for instance Tea, have spent decades here without getting a thread into double digits
