If this were a pc/console game where you could get different players from different eras to really gel, I’d want Maldini at rb and a libero (Baresi)/sweeper (Sammer)/inverted sweeper in front of a back 3 (Busquets)

Pirlo was class but no Xavi or Iniesta?

Sounds like a pretty solid start to a side... not really that controversial though is it? I reckon if you asked a thousand experts for their all-time side more than ninety percent of then would have Maldini and Baresi in defence. In fact I reckon close on one hundred percent would have Maldini. Just cos he's arguably the greatest defender of all time and versatile enough to play all across the back. I think he's a more definite pick than, say, Messi who has to compete with the likes of Ronaldo and, er, Ronaldo for a more limited number of positions depending on formation.

It’s a starting base from one of the more defensively solid international sides of its day

Biscetti deleted a world II with near enough every player capable of playing their opposite position - CB/CF’s, lb/rb etc - so the above posts dont read out of context

I see. I have always had a soft spot for Dublin though, effective player on his day and seens like a genuinely nice guy.

one of the more intriguing tournaments in recent years for crisp games, solid underdogs and no big offs (yet, wait for Marseilles 2.0)

3 massive elections on, multiple wars, work is bedlam so it’s a welcome refreshing change even if England‘s fluency is more dirgeful and laced with failing cohesion, pubs have been rammed too and I have to admire this degree of hope amongst all the moaning pundits

If Maldini plays RB he would have to be left wing in the other half. This was a team of players who could play like Saka did, in the same part of the field for the second half. I'm sorry but Dublin stays pending the discovery of some other striker/centre back.

austria was way better. dutch team got lucky again having to play against turkey and not against austria in the next round.
