In the entire barrio where I live in Sevilla there's only one other English speaking guy I know of, an ex military American dude called Greg. They love me here but I'm an exception.

Greg's a nice guy but seems very browbeaten by his Spanish wife and mother in law, I feel a bit sorry for him.

"Guiri (pronounced [ˈɡiɾi]) is a colloquial Spanish word often used in Spain to refer to uncouth foreign tourists, usually those with Northern European looks. However, it can also be applied to people from other foreign countries."

But they say it with a friendly sparkle in their eye when the call me it though

my impression is that its a city where the main attraction was the vibes and now the vibes are gone. the tourist land bit of barcelona is notably uninspiring i think. the gothic quarter and all of that. the ramblas feels like it might have been something once, but it's been converted to something else now that it's mostly for tourists. i really enjoyed the first time i was there though, i was like 21 and hadn't been hardly anywhere in southern europe, and at that point it really ticked those romantic boxes. if it was me i'd get on a train and go somewhere else in spain or france. or find whatever bits of the city are outside of the tourist bits. you could probably get up into the pyranees easily enough, that's the best bit of spain i've been to, all these little deserted bleak stone towns

really exceptional european country coz its mostly this massive arid empty mass with all the people clustered by the water. there's not another country like that on the continent. the others have more hospitable terrain. all these little old networks of towns and villages.
