A post of strung together notes because I can barely be arsed.

Dissensus has become embittered, reflecting the global post COVID malaise. A dark toxic cloud looms above while the inhabitants laugh it up below. Squabbling, contrived and generic banter by numbers, certain jealousies against actual talent, mob rule, listless, artless posting for posting's sake, half hearted attempts at stirring up the embers of yore, general 4chan level bs. All signs that the forum is in it's dying stages. Another sure sign is the meta, hyper self referential type of posting that's been going on the last few pages. Talking about posting. Taking about the forum from the 3rd person. Certain people always thinking they know better and trying to shape everything in their own image instead of just letting it breathe and evolve. There's a lostness to that. Being in a war where you don't even know what side you're on or who or what you're fighting for. The rupture during early COVID did some serious damage to this forum, but it was already pretty toxic before that. It's become more about instant gratification than actually building something. The positivity has been drowned out by toxicity. Petty snark, jealousy and bullying vs actually making an effort. Certain people who don't have much to contribute seem to especially enjoy jumping on the bullying wagon.

There's so many people who could have become bright, shining lights, but in the name of banter and instant gratification, you've basically clipped their wings, all the while justifying it as 'for their own good' or whatever else to lessen the subconscious guilt that comes with that.

Thing is though, who's actually even got the juice anymore? I would guess not many, and so it's easier to just do the schoolyard bullshit. And that shit tends to rear it's head more during these lulls.

It's a shame because this *was* one of the last outposts on the net.

Sometimes the beloved hazing goes too far.

In b4 someone posts 'well why even come here then?! 😤'

P.S. that's not to say that it's necessary wrong for it to be like this. I mean, a lot of what's going on here is just the current state of - and way of - the world, plus the law of the jungle, but the issue I have is that Dissensus still likes to see itself as some kind of intellectual hub and incubator of talent when in fact it's basically just a low grade boys club at this point. I mean how many new recruits have we had recently? Can't imagine being a newbie and wanting to sign up as it stands.

I should add that I'm saying all of this with compassion and genuine desire to see this place be what it could be, but I think some bitter pills are needed rn. I mean I could keep going, pointing out all the wackness, but ultimately I think my main takeaway is that the young Americans single handedly ruined the forum.

keep in mind i didn’t so much as log in for like five months last year. i’ve never been a reliable workhorse like, say, version is. i think for you, as someone who’s willed themselves into being a very productive, organized member of society (and/or was raised to be that way), it’s quite difficult to comprehend how little i accomplish in a typical day. a grubby, thankless task like effortposting on dissensus tends to take last priority. i’m working on it but old habits die hard.

I don't believe this. I've never thought it was a matter of will so much as vision and desire. And a catching fire from an environment full of sparks.

Some people catch sparks from the world firsthand some people catch them from other people. You get enough fire going, enough heat, you can burn anything down.

Imagine it had been the other way around. The things that might have been produced. @other_life's drunken rant the other week was right on point. I know certain folk's blood curdles at the mere sign of anything earnest and nice, but there are ways of doing positive reinforcement without it being repulsive.

Me and barty used to do this thing we called 'school talent show' where we would focus on either a negative destructive user or a shy timid one and make them go on stage to play the recorder or whatever

It all stemmed from this revelation i had on mdma where i was getting really frustrated with that demateriaisation thread cos no one would go along with it they were just abusing me and calling me a cunt so i methodially went round giving them all a biscuit and calling them a clever boy and suddenly it popped off they all started behaving.

Would also like to make clear that I think ribbing and hazing are good and to prove this I think we should publically brutalize @Clinamenic with a 5 strong pack of Cane Corso in the street right outside the Beverly Hills branch of Erewhon and all drink 18$ spirulina smoothies that he'd just paid for and cheer the dogs on as if we were at Ascot safely from behind the barrier while wearing extravagant hats

And obviously you cant positively reinforce willy nilly. You dont want to be positively reinforcing Mr Tea's puns for instance

Its definity not the worst atm. Not very cohesive,no drive, but Gus is doing well. I like shakas gentle musings. Version never gives up. Benny veers between batshit insane and insightful depending on whether hes discussing politics or literature. Just to name a few.

Only a few months ago this was a biscuits forum. Gus won it back for civilization and progress

ITs important to remember dissensus has been a cesspool for 99% of its existence. Brilliance is the exception not the rule.
Lassitude, personal animosity and spite is the factory setting.
