there is this trend on tiktok or instagram that has been annoying me lately. they're all called something like "pov you're in europe and having breakfast" or "pov you're on your lunchbreak in europe" and it's all americans sitting in a sunny italian town having loads and loads of fresh produce and drinking espresso's and wines and dining for hours, the message obviously being that in europe people don't really work and just live like gods

i reckon a whole new generation of travellers has been bred now. the young people travelling mentality is different to what it was when it was grimy spiritual backpackers . i can never quite get a handle on whether the latter exists anymore. but it was a massive thing for a while and i was in the middle of it and half the people i knew were doing that. i never hear of people like that anymore and it's vanished from popular culture or even niche culture

What has France, for example, got to offer the world now? Wine and cheese and heritage tourism. Not even a pop music industry. Not one single modern thing. [Except maybe some arms sales?]

ask Bernard Squarcini - the French commercial intelligence gathering world is vast and more corporately orientated, given they’re not in 5 Eyes

it’s difficult imagining the levels of disposable income in the US if you haven’t seen it and it’s only obvious within certain key cities/regions, Shaka’s 100k analogy is close hence the belief it can’t all come tumbling down

”we can always rent so and so’s bunker in Gstaad if war comes..”

like as an anecdote in my life here it is absolutely totally normal to meet people making $100,000 a year and i think i've met about one person in the uk who makes as much as that

My parents were making money like that, but being very smart and careful with money, they always did things like drove decades old cars because they knew they would be f*cked one they reached retirement age if they weren't as smart as possible about it all.
We also have very poor and inefficient social services/social safety net etc. even though we spend more money on a lot of those things per capita.

^ they were also having to constantly work and grind so much that there are family jokes about 15 years younger sister of mine never having had a home cooked meal
also pretty easy to way to ignore your son's ever-increasing difficulties caused by nvld and instead ship him off to his fundamentalist uncle's home for a couple of summers in a row in oklahoma, and/or let him rot living on the street if he refuses to stay there, or have him committed to a state mental hospital again for some minor shit
^sounds like somebody still's sore about some shit, yeah

people this side of the pond find it hard trying to imagine such a system, one with so many advances, levels of disposable income eg $ spent per dog in the US alone

tech is/was supposed to offer solutions but, short of hoists, we can’t even adapt homes safe or even practical for disabled living here either - we do have PIP though and you’d be straight onto enhanced payment levels

not sure where you've been so far in the states, shakahislop, but if you want to do a poverty tour, you can go up in them there appalachian "hollers" "over yonder" where one side of my family is from
can't guarantee you'll make it back unscathed though - have you seen Deliverance? it's a bit like that 😄
