it is art school bollocks fundamentally. totally without interest or merit. the only things we like are made by tough boys with knives in their jackets.

I'll try answering that:
One reason is the same reason that white people said that I listened to "n*gg*r shit" until hip hop turned primarily gangster, because they like to image themselves as gangster, or it gives them some kind of vicarious thrill.
Another reason is that for some reason, unlike other art forms, people generally only give music a few seconds to "hit" before they lose interest even if they otherwise spend their time with highfalutin' intellectual shit which would be the equivalent of "art school bollocks" in other forms of art.
Some people try to justify such things by saying that "low" and "high" art are the only worthwhile arts, because you def don't wanna be "basic".

And I'm not sure myself on whether or not it's a correct position. I just think it's an interesting frame.

I'm not sure really. More like just throwing some ideas out there, but also with lived experiences.

I did leave out the most obvious reason: Some music just hits different due to particular rhythmic elements (syncopation, funk, groove, etc.) and rhythmic sophistication/ornamentation that you don't find in other kinds of music.

I'm also referring to vocals/lyrical flows and rhyme placement with that statement^ especially in regards to the rhythmic sophistication and ornamentation, not just the "beats".
