Yeah I'm not saying there wasn't terrible album art in the past.

I kind of like that Teitelbaum cover though - what's the music like?

I was pretty horrified when I saw that THE RESIDENTS were using Midjourney AI to generate artwork for the inner sleeves for one of their latest albums ( Dr Dark 2025 )

The Residents artwork - and videos - go through this terrible abrupt plummet as soon as they get hold of digital technology. I once had to review a DVD of Residents films and promos and the gap between the early genius stuff and then this horrible, I don't what it was done with, some kind of video equivalent to Photoshop, material from probably end of 80s onwards.

But yes these are particularly unappetising.

lol - it's Anthony Braxton!

avant? improv? avant improv?

I've never been to Cafe OTO but I imagine it being like this, but slightly more amateur

edit: I posted the "Richard Teitelbaum With Anthony Braxton" album cover because I was immediately reminded of it by the Dension Witmer album cover you posted - I feel there may be a "nod" going on there

I stopped listening to THE RESIDENTS after THE MOLE SHOW, maybe I tell I a lie, I did buy the James Brown covers LP but something went seriously wrong some time in the mid 80s, I lost all interest but I do sometimes check up on what they are doing and it leaves me depressed

The Mole Show is so dreary

But I saw them live in the late 80s doing stuff from the American Composers series and it was great theatre

this one just came out, and also works incredibly well as a thumbnail. totally lines up with the choons, lets you know what you're getting yourself into - the visual's an intrinsic part of how the music hits my brain

conversely.... geordie greep the new sound a record ive liked... in my opinion has a great cover.... it makes me think tho.... is an unconcious essential to a record cover an image that looks "cool" that can be seperated from the music?.... for example.... the merch at his concert is just this painting.... his name and the album name is nowhere on the shirt.... so when you see the shirt.... u may not even know its an album cover.... i dont know i feel like thats a secret key to making an album cover.... an image that is universally aesthetic.....
