existential crisis, feeling like I'm in a creative prison

I feel trapped.

so, i've been working on a new track for several days now and I keep coming up with ideas that I spend hours and hours developing just to ultimately scrap them

Maybe I've let this board exert to much influence on my thinking, but one thing that really has me in a bind is the feeling that "oh, never mind, the dissensus consensus is that sounds old".

What am I to do, make some rhythms or throw in some loops that supposedly sound "crazy" because they are syncopated 160bpm rhythms made from dry, untreated decades old drum machine sounds?

I guess I can't do anything too noisy or distorted unless I can get someone to spit some bars in order to give it street cred.

Maybe I should just scrap it all - have I just wasted a bunch of money (that I'm still paying back over time) to produce electronic music in 2025?

Why does it seem like rock and pop music are immune from this?
I mean, Sabrina Carpenter can have a #1 hit song with loops named Surf Dad Rhythm (SURF DAD?????!!!!!) and Disco Live Feel (DISCO???!!!).
While Goldie's new Rufige Krew release sounds dated, right?!?!

ugh - don't know what to do anymore!

Dissensus probably a major factor here. this is the last place you want in mind when creating anything. if you're serious i would get these lads and their embittered worn out opinions far far out of your head. plenty of incredible music shared to be inspired by, but the people themselves as an audience? no no no. no no! these people dont dance! some have never been in a fucking club!!!

I wouldn't worry about Shaka Hislop's infatuation with Sabrina Carpenter. thing is he lost his virginity to hallucinogens floral fractal neuro sponges in 2004 or whenever in Somerset...

As others have said dissensus +fittingly+ doesn't represent the consensus taste of electronic music fans. And is ultimately approx 15 middle aged blokes.

I was thinking about this yesterday. Used to post on forums like dubstep forum and dnba where there were plenty of arguments over what was good and not but ultimately were generally very enthusiastic places where a lot of people would enjoy enjoying things together.

Dissensus isn't like that, in part because it's just a much less genre defined place, and it's unclear how many people even end up here.

You can't get a thread going on here about new music it'll be stamped on or just ignored. Cos of the age thing I guess. But also it's like... Can you expect thirdform, pattycakes and kid Charlemagne (three names at random) to agree over what is good music and not?

Mind you I do have friends IRL who are quite dismissive of a lot of what I share with them and often I sort of agree with them cos I am much more ominverous than they are and also have laxer standards.

Dissensus reminds me of the scary skateboard shops I'd go in as a pubic louse with older kids behind the counter who I was terrified of being sneered at by.

In other words, a lovely atmosphere.

Maybe so, but still I think people here have said some valid things that I've been pondering and thinking about a lot.
